I had Fowler for 115 and Ill take Matthes over him anyday. I got a B+. Very helpful probably the hottest bio teacher in the department. Exams were tough but he wrote a questions book for HMG text

Very nice guys and very helpful in office hours. Problem sets wee fun to do. Lectures very much so followed the assigned readings. If you didnt learn anything from his lectures it was probably because you did not read prior to class. Just follow his assigned readings and his lectures are based off of them. I worked to get an A- his exams are tricky

Im tired of everyone complaining how these upperDiv Bio courses require a lot of reading! As you advance the more difficult the theories get, READ and as many times as you need to fully understand the topic. READ THE TEXT, and if you have any questions he is very helpful. Not difficult to get a hold of outside of class. I got an A was taking 17unit

Very quick lecture. Not sure how to study for this class. Class is so hard. He fails everybody at first so he can manipulate the curve later, which is very unfair. Don't take him take Dr. Fowler.

I think he did a very good job at teaching the molecular genetics course in fall 2004. Gives tricky MCQs in his exams- but gives very meaningful feedback(devotes one whole lecture to going over the exam).I thought it was fun solving the tricky MCQs. He also chose a good text:Genome-the pics in it are self explanatory. I hardly had to read the text.

nice guy,but sucks at teaching. not interesting at all, not very organized with his lectures...much easier than bio 3,but it's so boring that it's hard to do well unless u spend hrs and hrs reading the book...only 25 mutilple choice questions for exams,which sucks...

He gives the most difficult M/C tests ever, maybe that is why his tests are slightly curved. Although his lectures are very interesting, going to class doesn't guarantee an A. And if you don't keep up with the reading, don't bother going. Just read the book back and forth or avoid taking his class.
