He is a kind man who is willing to help in class as well as outside when he is available. Tough grader tho, very very specific in what he is looking for.

I had professor Raker for Chem112 and out of all of the other chem courses I've taken (chem 2, orgo 1, orgo 2) I would say Prof Raker was my favorite. I did really well in the class, I could follow his lectures and he was always willing to help with homework and/or review questions. It was a tough course but I am grateful for how he pushed me.

Beware!!!!! Do not take this professor. He is a tough grader and takes off for misspelling, I would not recommend him to anyone. He takes off points for every little thing. Dose not really have a good method for teaching, You basically take notes and kind of teach yourself in the way you would understand. I regret taking his class.

Harshest grader you will meet. Had him for lab and he would argue with you over the measurement of your meniscus because he wouldn't accept that it landed on an even, rounded number. Spelling of IUPAC nomenclature counted against you and he took major points off multi-part questions if you got one part wrong. Unforgiving in grading.

He's nerdy, which makes what he says interesting. But if you have say a 7 point question, write down the wrong number for one thing, and still get it right- there goes 5 points. My dog is a better grader. Avoid at all costs.

I only had him for lab, and it was pretty good. He is 100% a nerd, and it's quite entertaining. Since I didn't have him for lecture, I can't really say anything for his teaching skills since lab there really isn't much teaching involved. But he is a nice person, but tends to relate to the "nerdy" students as well.

friendly is NOT going to help me pass the class. I am not angry because I failed the class, I was planning on doing this review regaurdless. I actully did pass the class, but only with the help of the turor. I think that he actully enjoys making the coarse hard. He takes off way too many points and He does not explin things well.

Dry wit? I would hardly call his comments to his students witty - perhaps he's become bitter and full of resentment since then. Mr. Raker is a super tough grader, and his teaching leaves much to be desired. Students beware! He's the only teacher I've ever had such a tough time with.

Nice person-when he is talking about comic books! I would never take him again. Very strict with grading, no room for mistakes. Takes off points for spelling and not putting the formula even if you show work and the answer is correct! Summer school final was 20 pages with over 150 questions including essays, multiple choice and equations.Good luck!

Raker is a nice guy, but his teaching style assumes too much (as in, the students understanding what he's talking about). He is knowledgeble, but his empathy for students who just can't wrap their minds around thermodynamics needs work. I got along well with him, but be prepared for his dry wit;it can be scathing.

Lab: not a terrible lab teacher, but then the lab manual pretty much spells everything out for you. Take very detailed notes during the intro sessions and be very detailed and very specific in all homework answers! I lost points for not including the specific color in one response when it had been included in the previous question's response.

Lecture: As a person- very nice. As a teacher- TERRIBLE! I dropped and took the summer session and my grade went from a potential D to an A. And that potential D was with a weekly tutoring session plus around 20 hours a week spent outside of class/homework reading and working problems. The exams are too lengthy and there is NO extra credit.

Everybody in his class are repeating the course because he failed everybody the first time. Not even tutors or IA sessions will help you pass. I've never gotten full points for a questions, -1 here, -7 there. Ridiculous grading! Writes on tests "CYM" change your major. and "Don't cry over this test, emotion is for the weak!"

He is nice as a person, but not as a teacher. There is NO extra credit. He's clueless as to how long the work takes a student- 30 min to take quiz that took him 35 min to put up on the board (using notes & shortcuts). Some homework problems on things not yet covered. Get a tutor and go to the IA sessions, and heaven help you.

Raker is an unbending hard-ass. The astronomy class I took with him was an introductory course, but Raker "taught" it as though we were astronomers in the making. He offered no help. He even told our class one evening: I know some of you get As in your other classes, but don't expect one in this class.
