He is very passionate about the subject matter, but his lectures are very dry. DO NOT take him at 8:30. He does not like to respond to emails, and he grades fairly difficultly. I learned a lot, but I did not love the style of the teaching. Midterm and final required lots of studying.

Interesting topic and pretty good prof but absolutely do not take this class at 8:30. He told us once that a student said his voice was like a pillow begging people to go to sleep and it really is true. Nice man but I found it next to impossible to stay awake in class!

Dr. Rutledge is precious! Take notes in class and do the readings and you should be fine. Can be boring. Work hard on the paper and be well prepared for the tests and you should be fine.

I absolutely love Dr. Rutledge! He is such a nice old man...very cute. He is very passionate about religion, and he has a pretty liberal view of the bible. The man knows stuff. He is soft spoken making it difficult to stay awake, but he provides a lot of interesting material to his lectures. He sparked my desire to double major in religion.

Dr. Rutledge is one of the nicest people I have ever met, but this class will put you to sleep. It had tremendous potential to be interesting, but simply wasn't. Not an easy grader, but if you know the texts really well, you will do fine.

Is pretty easy to get along with, and makes broad general comments that are tough to disagree with, but nothing you learn in his class is very interesting and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get an A.

This is one of the nicest teachers I have ever met. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and even if you are not very interested in it he makes the class interesting. He will always meet with you and help you if you are having difficulties and he is very understanding.

Awesome professor. I really enjoyed the class and ended up with a solid A. However, I did take a lot of Bible classes in HS (we had to write several exegeticals), so I was very well-prepared going into this class. Still, hard work will pay off. Also, be sure to write your papers in time to get him to read over them.

Rutledge is an awesome guy, his voice however will put you to sleep, especially in the 8:00 class. Pretty difficult class, lots of reading and you really dont know what to study before tests. Very few grades, so if you make one bad grade you better "PRAY" that you do really good on the others!

An amazing professor...so much knowledge, and so much love for the earth. Dr. Rutledge is one of the nicest, gentlest professors I've known. BUT, VERY DIFFICULT. Take his classes, but do not expect to make an A. He's a tough grader, but the experience

Nicest prof I've had at Furman...However he expects you to know way too much about the subject and he is so unclear on EVERYTHING. Do not take this class unless you want a frustrating class. Avoid!!

One of the hardest teachers I have had in my life, REALLY NICE GUY, but expects you to be religion experts during his class, and know as much as he does. The most unclear person I have every met when it comes to test review. If you don't want to be a religion major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

NICE MAN! NyQuil voice. Team teaching with another professor was interesting--Rutledge likes essays; Worthen likes short answer. Confusing, direction-less test taking experience for students. 20 page paper to write. Be persistent about test formats.

He's not my discussion leader, but I wish he were. He's nice and easy to listen to as long as you're not exceptionally tired. I love his lectures, and I might take more of his classes if my schedule allows.
