He just conjured my grade from thin air instead of adding test and assignment scores. I had to go to the department head in order to get my grade raised up where it belonged. Avoid !

Enjoyed his lectures. His feedback on my writing was kind and very helpful. I felt like he wanted me to learn and succeed. I would take a course with him again in a heartbeat!

Comment:

Passionate about his subject matter and talks in hyperbole about chord progressions and tonal levels. It makes the subject a lot more edible. He wants students to succeed. If I had a criticism, it would be that he struggles to be succinct and concrete for those who need it.

The best theory professor I have had to date. He is really passionate about what he is doing and that carries over into his teaching. His tonal tests were a little tricky but he taught atonal stuff well and all of his tests are open note. Doesn't give busywork.

An absolutely phenomenal professor. He is very excited about theory...even to the point of being a little nerdy but the class wouldn't be as fun without it. He will go out of his way to help you understand what is going on. Even if you never take another music class, make sure you take this guy.

This is the only man I've ever taken a class from that attempted to turn an objective subject like Music Theory into a subjective "lets all guess what Dr. Schwarz is thinking" fest. Clearly knows his stuff, but is amazingly unclear, and his grading policies are, at best, random. "Perfect theory only nets you a B". Ok, sure Dr. S, go with that

Awesome teacher. The only one I've had yet that actually makes Theory interesting. Can be hard to follow at times, but he can always clarify eventually. This guy's excitement about what he's teaching really rubs off. Wish I could have had him for all of my Theory classes.

This dude is totally awesome. Obsessed w/ Twin Peaks. Wears black leather skinny ties. Listens to all sorts of music and applies it to modern atonal theory. Your music degree will be horribly incomplete without a class with Schwarz.
