Comment:

This is a class that seems unnecessary but is really good to have on a resume. Umphress is a fun lecturer that keeps the class engaged. Your grade is entirely based on 8 projects that are somewhat time consuming but not super difficult. The worst part is the amount of logged data he requires, which seems a bit excessive at times.

Comment:

We were given eight assignments, the first three were really easy, assignments 4-7 were based on a Rubik's Cube and needed a few hours of work each, and the last assignment was a calculations homework and needed about an hour to complete. This class has no test or final but participation is necessary he will get upset if people stop coming.

Really funny guy. Good lecturer and he really knows what he's talking about. It took a long time to get our midterm grades back though and the grading was very unclear. Keep up with the term project because it can kill your grade. Final was easy.

Don't graduate without taking Dr. Umphress! He is exceptional. He is so patient and encouraging (not to mention hilarious). He also has the ability to make anything interesting. We learned about something I hated in another class, but loved in his.

Works very hard on his courses and makes his lectures interesting and engaging. His assignments require a lot of hard work and effort to complete. Great professor, cares about students, if you don't take him for something, you are missing out on a big part of Auburn software engineering education.

BEST TEACHER I ever had!!! I was much better at coding in python by the end of this semester than I ever was. He raised my interest in software process and its applications; I never thought I would ever apply Software Process in actual industry, but he made me reconsider it. His teaching style is awesome, never felt bored during his lectures.

A lot of time in the class was spend on heavyweight processes, which many students won't use in the industry. Assignments can contain lots of ambiguity, and the students are at fault if there's an issue. As the class progresses, lectures begin to drag on. Attendance is somewhat mandatory, you can miss 6 days unexcused. Required class, pretty boring

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN! Doctor Umpress is amazing. My ability to program good, quality code has risen exponentially because of him. He is incredibly friendly, helpful, caring, and smart. He's the kind of guy hat makes you want to do your homework well just so you don't disappoint him. Put forth effort, work early, and you will do well!

Everything about the assignments was terrible. They were long, useless, and the grades were seemingly given arbitrarily. Lectures are reasonably interesting but the assignments are a colossal waste of time, and the mandatory attendance just makes things worse.

I've been to a couple of other universities, been taught by all sorts of professors, and NONE come close to Dr. Umphress. He's absolutely incredible! Very well organized and puts a lot of thought and effort into the material he teaches, and presents it very well. I loved attending his class. I would definitely recommend taking any class with him

Outstanding professor. This was my second class with him. He goes way out of his way to make sure you understand the material (if you are willing to talk with him - he even answers his phone!). His lectures are fun and entertaining. It's very difficult to fail his class. Be nice and engaged in his classes, and you will be rewarded with A's.

One of the best professors in the department, if not the university. He definitely knows and believes in what he teaches, unlike other professor who seem to teach because they have to. You effectively learn software process by going through a series of hw assignments that become incrementally more process oriented. Gave us a "take home" final!
