Dayle Barnes is the greatest professor I have ever had. All the bad comments are from people who do not cherish the language he teaches so delicately. He has the best sense of humor and is kind, I am actually tearing up rn. Take this class!!!! you won't regret it :))))

This course is a waste, Barnes is has good grasp of the language, but is a horrible teacher and person. He should have been fired years ago. My wife is Chinese, and could not understand his text book. It is a waste of paper.

First of all if you go to class you can't get less than a B. That being said, sure the man is crazy but that's half the fun. If you can get over his insanity and talk to the man then you will will realize that he cares very much for all of his students and will go out of his way to help as long as you let him know you need it.

It's nice to know that this professor has been spending time giving himself his own reviews and saying that he is a great teacher. Anyone who's studied languages before would know hands-down that he is a horrible professor that even the university has been trying to get rid of for quit some time. Hope he's gone soon.

The man is no doubt crazy but there is a method to his madness. He wants you to be focused on just what's in his textbooks (always under revision, but mostly coherent) and not be distracted. The spoken class doesn't move too fast, though the writing class does at times. As long as you attend most of the classes you'll get an A or B.

Professor Barnes has officially killed my interest of Chinese. I came into his class loving the language and the culture, but attend his class and have him slowly suck out everything that has meaning to you is just too much for me. This man is an embarrassment to the teaching world.

Never taking his classes again. I mean, the recitation instructors are good since they're from China, but Prof. Barnes is just intolerable. I can learn more Chinese from simple beginner's self-taught Chinese lesson than what he can teach in a whole semester. Such a waste of my time

He knows what he's talking about and he has a pretty comprehensive course of study to get you fluent in Chinese. He's very willing to meet outside of class and wants to be involved in his students' academic lives. If you actually dedicate yourself to this course, you won't have anything to complain about. If you're lazy, you won't do well in it.

Nice try Barnes, but no one in your classes likes you because of how your teaching capabilities are so inadequate and how your books are filled with grammar mistakes and character mistakes. Honestly, your gonna have to do better than that

Bai laoshi (Prof. Barnes) is probably the best professor I have here at Pitt. If you have a problem, he's always willing to work with you. He's currently helping me set up a self-design major so I can fit everything I want into a four year program, including classes outside of the Chinese department.

How is it that this man thinks assigning a writing test that's on a chapter that we have not even finished is a fair test? This guy makes less and less sense and anytime you ask him a genuine question, he shoots you down or says that he doesn't know. How the heck can he NOT KNOW, he's the head professor of the this program. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS

How does a professor LOSE final exams after students have taken them?! He is ridiculous. I can't stand how he teaches or how he doesn't seem to care about anybody's concern. I absolutely do not recommend this professor for any course he teaches

Okay anyone who says that Prof.Barnes is a great professor is out of their minds. He does speak Mandarin Chinese very well but he cannot teach it at all. He does not teach grammar or even useful vocab in Mandarin. His books aren't even correct. He has to be insane. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSES, TAKE BASIC CHINESE INSTEAD

A magnificent professor- will frustrate students that are grade oriented. However if you are interested in learning, he will teach you how to speak and write/read Chinese.
