This professor is so sweet and good natured, not the best teacher I've had. Deb is pretty spacey and has a difficult time concentrating.

She is amazing and incredibly caring! She has a lot of great experience and encourages students to think outside of what they are used to/comfortable with. She is enthusiastic and she respects and believes in all of her students.

Comment:
Very sweet lady who loves talking about Social Work; however, she speaks extremely quietly and always goes off on tangents. Class doesn't officially start until about 20 mins into the hour. The material is mainly common sense and the tests are always curved. Don't bother buying the textbook, you don't need it. Her tests are solely on her lectures.

Comment:
She mumbles, doesn't stick to her syllabus, and goes off on tangents with personal stories. She thinks she's covered a lot more material in class than she does. Her powerpoints are just lists of organization names. When she grades assignments she gives everyone in the class very similar comments. An intro class shouldn't be this hard. :(

Comment:
Deb is an awful teacher. I have spent the past four years with this woman and I feel that she hurts the overall reputation of the college. Internship supervisors dread meeting with her and reflect on our abilities due to her lack of skills. She is scatter brained and unprofessional at all times. Worse experience at Hope College will be with her.

She is a kind woman but her structure and sense of direction regarding class material is severely lacking. I would not recommend this class to anyone unless you need it to graduate. I learned absolutely nothing new about social work and the tests were difficult because they were based mostly off lecture and she talked about her life in class.

Comment:
I was EXTREMELY disappointed in Deb's teaching. She is the head of the department and my adviser and I did not have her until Interventions 3, as a senior. It seems she will do anything to pawn her classes on to someone else. She also struggled with focus and class mainly consisted of her mumbling/giggling and telling personal stories.

Deb is a sweet lady, but I was disappointed in her teaching. She's very spacey, talks about herself all of the time, & doesn't engage her students at all. To me, her class was a waste of time & money. I literally learned nothing. I wish she would connect material w/current world issues. Someone w/more passion needs to teach Intro to Soc Welfare.

Not very clear at all. Her study guides are spacey and its frusterating. However, she is a kind woman and if you express concerns she will try her best to help.

Comment:
Difficult to pay attention in class because she has no sense of structure or focus. Everything becomes a story, and not an interesting one at that. Have learned next to nothing after 3 years with her. She's kind and passionate, but much too spacey and scatterbrained to teach effectively or efficiently. Her classes feel like a waste of time.

do not take this class unless absolutely necessary. I did not learn anything about social work that I could not have learned on my own from reading the book. It did not help me decide whether I wanted to do social work as a career. I was very disappointed and felt like the class was a major waste of time.

Comment:
I thought her class was a little boring and had a lot of lectures that were mostly meaningless, she also made this class the very essence of an intro class. I know this class is an intro into the social work major, however, we didn't go in depth on any materials. The class itself is fairly easy with a simply A, just read the chapters.
