Worth taking the extra time to produce thorough work. He is a thoughtful grader which is a blessing and a curse. Says he rarely gives A's but also rarely gives poor grades, in his own words more or less. I would definitely take a class from Derek Buescher again.

Comment:
Governmentality and torture was an awesome class and it got me fixated on media studies despite being a biology major. Buescher was helpful, responded to emails, and was understanding. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is very interesting and modern! Definitely would take another communications class from him.

Derek was/is a really good teacher. I had his governmentality and Torture class. It sounds weird but was really interesting. He's also my adviser so he's really helpful and easy to understand.

Derek is a great teacher. He certainly starts out slow but his classes warm up to the point where you begin to discuss a lot of socially relevant issues. You just have to care enough to pay attention. He's also extremely helpful outside of class (if you can get a hold of him!) Take his classes if you're interested in Communications!

Totally not what the course description said; he actually admitted to totally re-working the course on the second day of class. He's a sweet guy, but speaks like a textbook and he's pretty preoccupied with writing his own book. Rather than talking about adventure, we spent a ton of time on grammar and structure of arguments.

This class bummed me out. Derek was extremely unorganized and flaky. He took a month to hand back the first paper! He's a nice guy, but overall his teaching was sub-par.

We didn't see eye to eye at all. This course was pointless, too. All that said, he's a pretty nice guy. Just remember to challenge his statements in class, don't take what he says for granted.
