Comment:
For Creative Writing, don't expect to learn techniques. Instead, it's reading a LOT of student works and critiquing the life out of you. It is also, however, reading admirable authors. Mitch has great passion for what is *worth* reading, but will be honest if it is bad writing. He loves open discussion, so always be prepared to debate w/ him.

Ok, gotta give him credit for his critiques, he could make you a better writer if you listen. However, he is egotistical, and a jerk. He is just plain mean, when you read your work out load, it's like an open persecution of your writing. Very harsh, and not needed, and if he messes up, be prepared for him to blame you.

Always late to class, assumes you already know what you are there to learn...but somewhere, deep down is a decent instructor.

I recommend this professor to anyone who truly wants to write, you will learn a lot! P. Berman is very critical of student work, but seriously, you are college students. If you can't get use to critical, don't be a writer!

I agree with most of the comments that he's egotistical. If he knows his material, it does the students no good because he chooses to lord his knowledge over others instead of sharing. I'm not sure how someone can think pretension is a good thing... My biggest complaint, though, is his inconsistent attitude. Some days, he's calm, pacific, but other days, he lets you have it with both barrels, for no reason! I hate shifting sand and for this reason I haven't taken a class from him since, and will not.

Underneath that gruff exterior, believe it or not, is a person who really does care a lot about his students. He conducts workshops poorly and negatively, but let's hope he learns from his mistakes. Needs to not be afraid to show a little encouragement

He's tough, but he knows his stuff (esp fiction critique). Yes, he can be abrasive, but I'd rather have that and talent than a nice prof who knows nothing. His organization varies. Sometimes he's right on, others he's a mess.

Avoid at all costs. The most disorganized and egotistical teacher I've ever come across. Always late for class, loses papers, insults students, thinks we're all there just to listen to his opinions about whatever's on his mind.
