Derek is a wonderful professor. He is very articulate, knows his stuff, and is absolutely hilarious. The people who insult him below have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Chances are they're the conceited know-it-alls who talk back to Derek and just get what's coming to them. He's a great prof, it's a great class.

Derek is an awesome prof. He's very chill and fairly understanding of everyone's individual needs. He clearly knows what he's talking about, and it's just all around a great class! I find he's very direct with what he wants in his assignments, but he allows a lot of creative liberty. All around I love this class.

Derek is amazing. One of the best professors at Queen's. He really wants people to do well and is extremely helpful. He takes an interest and has extremely good insight for people willing to take criticism.

This is a guy who knows what he's teaching. Very dry, and being in a small darkened room at 9:30 AM doesn't help the class stay awake - bring coffee. But for a first taste of film production, a very effective course. And Derek is outrageously funny if you manage to be alert enough to catch his jokes.

I like Derek. Sure the material can be a little dry and he is a little low key, but he is great and really quite humourous if you get it!

Extremely boring mandatory class. Material is ridiculously easy if you have any prior knowledge of film production. After years, he still seems incapable of confidently teaching a class. He is, however, quite easygoing and will help you when you need it.

Just plain sucked. Seemed to deliver lectures on the fly. Doesn't even bother to update course material (notice the textbook pages are from two editions prior to the most recent). Made me want to change major.

Derek is a great teacher. The material, although not my cup of tea, was given in such a way that even technologically stupid students like myself could understand it. Derek is subtly hilarious and always willing to help, night or day.

Set the bar high, didn't waste time on individual complaints about not teaching every little thing about technology. Nice guy. Can anybody say they didn't come out with more knowledge and experience than when they went in? Besides, if you're at Queen's for the production side of film, brotha, you picked the wrong school.

He is the worst professor I have ever had. I'm honestly thinking of leaving Queen's b/c of him, Film is the only course I'm interested in and Derek royally sucks at teaching it.

Can nobody else teach this course? Derek is a terrible teacher, he doesn't want to be there and either did I. He is not approachable and teaches as if everyone already knows what they're doing. His material is so outdated that he wastes most of the class time trying to remember what his slides were supposed to represent when he made them in the 80s

A horrible prof. His lecture material and notes are ridiculously outdated, and, as others stated, he is uncomfortable speaking to the class. The material in this course could be taught in half the time (although most of it is irrelevant because it has been technologically outdated since the 80s).

A teacher with absolutely nothing to teach. He runs out of material after the midterm and starts using filler. The assignments are fun but kind of pointless, sort of like, "here kids go play with a camera for a few hours and I'll give you all gold stars". He's been teaching 250 since the stone age.

One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Please, Film Studies, let Mark or someone NEW teach this course. Everything I learned in this course was from the sub-par textbook, fellow students, or Mark. It's clear that Redmond hates teaching the class. Extremely ineffective, Redmond's a terrible teacher

awkward instructor. found a way to spread four weeks worth of information over two semesters without providing nearly enough hands-on experience for first-timers. all in all, clumsy with curriculum.

derek is someone who grows on you.i get the feeling he doesnt like his younger students (250 vs. 410). very technical, so if you know your stuff you are set, but for first timers, learning can be difficult.

Also 250. I found that Derek knows a lot of technical stuff about film but has no sense of theory or any creative elements whatsoever, which makes his classes somewhat challenging as he teaches filmmaking. Outside of class he kind of grew on me though.

Was consistently rude and extremely critical; made me feel extremely uncomfortable asking for guidance. Redmond's class is the reason I switched majors to history.
