Desmond is an amazing professor - he's passionate about the course's content and your success. He is tough, lots of reading and pop quizzes but the expectations are given to you from the beginning. Definitely worth taking one of his courses, he really brought me to a new level of reading comprehension and writing.

Desmond is without a doubt the best teacher I've had at FSU, and probably ever in school. He not only knows pretty much everything about anything he is teaching, but also knows how to TEACH it, and helps out his students as much as possible. Take him if you have the opportunity.

I really loved taking a class with Desmond. He is very involved with his students and wants people to succeed. As a 300 level course, there was a lot of reading and he knew who was and wasn't doing it by the reading quizzes. He was not always clear in what he wants in assignments but he was available for extra help and answered any questions.

I love this professor! He is always friendly, helpful, and easy to talk to. His literature classes are amazing. He has the quirkiest brilliant unrehearsed answers in class discussions, and the best one liners ever. Reading quizzes and a demanding but fair grader and wants you to do well. I loved every class. They were all memorable. Take him!

Dr. McCarthy is very helpful and loves what he does. He is more than just a professor but a mentor to all his students. Attendance and participation is mandatory and he expects you to speak in class. Readings from Western Lit are interesting. He gives pop quizzes so make sure you do the readings. Best prof at FSU

Wonderful man and great professor. For anyone who is serious about learning, I would recommend taking a class with him. He is tough but will do anything to help his students when he sees they are trying. If he has a fault, it is that he is too involved with his students, and too absorbed in his profession. Not a bad fault to have!

Dr. McCarthy is one of the best professors at FSU. He is, perhaps, one of the best in the world. You will leave his class with a deepened respect for literature. Even more, you will leave his class with a deepened understanding of what it means to be alive. His lectures are inspirational and timeless.

He was the kindest, most caring professor I have ever had. I took pretty much all the classes he offered after taking his first one. I also worked with him on The Gatepost newspaper - he was, in many ways, more a mentor to me than a teacher.

Dr. McCarthy is hands down one of my two favorite professors at FSC (Arthur Nolletti being the other). Upon taking his class, my first impression of him was a strict man who would shove information down students' throats, but that is just him being honest. Changed my life and solidified my pursuit of teaching.

Everyone has that prof who changes their life, and for me it was Desmond McCarthy. Five years out of the 'ham and I am way ahead in my career because of everything I learned from him in his classes and The Gatepost. He's the most helpful person at Framingham State and the best mentor, advisor and teacher I have ever had.

Took journalism classes etc. with Des. Such an amazing professor who's always there to help you when you need it. Keeps class involved in discussion and always has an interesting story to tell. By far the best professor I've had at FSC thus far. His classes are difficult but as long as you put in effort and hard work you'll do fine.

Oh Desmond. One of my top three favorite professors at FSC. He takes his job very seriously, and expects you to as well. He is witty and tells a lot of great stories. I would not suggest taking seminar with him if there are easier professors, as he is the only one who truly follows the strict guidelines... I looooove this man. A+

May be getting a B in his class, but I'll gladly give this man an A+ for teaching. He is probably one of the smartest men I have ever met yet never speaks down to you. Nothing he says ever goes over your head and he makes sure of that. A very tough grader, but never unfair about anything. I could sit in his class easily for over 2 hrs no problem!

Incredibly smart professor. Going to this class was like getting an interesting news report on what is going on in the world today. This makes you intrigued and therefore you pay attention in class and don't notice you're there for 2 hours. Always sets aside time to help any student.
