Interesting guy who really knows his stuff, but not the best at teaching. The class was very disorganized and he frequently forgot about assignments and changed due dates. Not very good at getting the class engaged with the material. Tests were fair. One disclaimer: TAKE GRAMMAR (ELang 325) before taking this class. Phonetics would also be helpful.

This class was tough. VERY disorganized, the TA grades all assignments with no grading criteria given to students, and he goes back and forth during lectures on what the correct answer is. I couldn't even use the textbook for reference because his lectures differ from it sometimes. Not impossible to pass, but take it from someone else if you can.

Took the online class and don't know what kind of lecturer he is. Online classes were humorous. Some errors in the lessons, probably just proofreading glitches which didn't make that much difference. The biggest problem was that he differs from the text on some terminology creating confusion. Tests were harder than expected. I aced the paper!

As an independent study professor, Dr. Chapman was the best I've had. He gave such generous amounts of interesting and instructive feedback, it really made the class into an interactive experience. I wouldn't hesitate to take a class from him again.

Frankly, I would take this class from another teacher. He's a great guy, but his lectures are sometimes unclear and he doesn't prepare you for the tests. The TAs grade the papers and never leave feedback; the grades seem randomly assigned as there is no information on why you were docked points. It was a dull, frustrating class.

Great teacher and really makes it a group learning process rather than just him lecturing the whole time. He is incredibly willing to work with you personally and the projects are interesting and worthwhile, not just busy work.

Good solid teacher. Tries to get the class to think about how we use language rather than just memorize a bunch of usage rules. I learned a lot. Cares about the students and helpful.

Don't take this class from him! He was totally disorganized and would make us watch movies as part of class while he took a nap against the wall. His syllabus was a mess and he had no idea what he was doing. The lectures were all over the place, and it was obvious that he hadn't prepared the night before.

Don't let any negative reviews of Dr. Chapman keep you from taking his class. He is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. He sincerely loves teaching & he's very humble and funny. His class may be a bit disorganized, but he's just dying to give you extra help if you need it. Talking to him one on one is helpful. It's easy to get an A.

It was a good class. Chapman is funny and really tries to help students out. At first, the material and HW seemed quite intimidating, but it's not bad. The tests are very thorough, you can't fake it on them. Memorizing facts isn't good enough, you must be able to learn principles and apply them to tough, ugly real-life examples.

The biggest problem with this class, is that you can go to the lectures and understand everything that is being taught and feel like you know it, but then do awful on the tests. This is deep grammar, and he often disagrees with the textbook, as a lot of it is subjective. He's a nice guy, but it's really tough to prepare for the tests.

Dr. Chapman is really nice and helpful, a prof who really cares for the students. The subject was really tough, and each test was progressively harder. However, I did enjoy class, and the subject wasn't impossible if you put forth some effort. I wasn't a fan of the text, I mostly used the glossary and that's it.

I LOVE DR. CHAPMAN. He really is geeky and quirky. He loves discussion and discovering new things about English. He teaches the material very efficiently and has pretty easy tests. His teaching style may not be for everyone, but it was definitely for me. Highly recommended taking any class from him.

I had Chapman for 3 classes while doing a BA degree at BYU 2000-2003. He was straight forward and fair in his grading. I felt I learned a lot in his classes.

It takes a while to get used to his teaching style. He LOVES the subject though, and you can tell that he really does know a lot. He has a good sense of humor, mostly because he is an English history geek - but it's what makes his class so interesting. There are a few tough projects, but they are very doable if you do your part. I would recommend!!

He's a fun guy--super quirky, but funny. The sentences he uses for examples will crack you up. He's super easy-going. But if you want any organization at all, DO NOT take the class. His thoughts jump all over the place--there were days that I took notes that were completely wrong because it was just so jumbled. I'd recommend someone else.

I am so glad his class is over! He is a very knowledgable professor, and he really wants everyone to understand the material. Unfortunately, his lectures are muddled and confusing. It's difficult to know what he's talking about unless you've seriously studied the text. I don't feel like I learned a thing. I would recommend taking somone else.

Professor Chapman is one of the many delightfully geeky professors in the department. He's quirky, thoughtful, and intelligent. Not a breezy class. You want a good grade, you'll work for it, buthe gives you the freedom to focus on those things interesting to YOU. He's easy-going, which makes the work very stress free... if you do work.

Early Modern English... what a joke! He rarely taught a thing. He opened most class time to students to say things about the "readings" and then he theorized about the principles. I didn't learn a single concrete EME principle. The quizzes every week simply review the assigned readings. The tests aren't too bad if you can manage to stay awake duri

This class was the most boring class I've taken at BYU (I learned more in my high school English classes). He seems like a helpful guy, and he has a subtle sense of humor and likes to randomly break out in song. I've heard he's good in the Old English course, but this one was incredibly painful for me to endure.
