I hate math, but Shimamoto made me look forward to class. He's a fantastic professor. He teaches his class without any lecture notes - it's impressive. There weren't many tests, but they were definitely tough.

Comment:

Best lecturer at Swarthmore. He's super funnya bit awkward (especially in office hours), but he's one of the nicest, most helpful people. I never felt like my time was wasted in his class; every problem has a purpose, and his classes have changed my mindset on math. Phenomenal professor! His classes are worth every second of struggle!

Comment:

Shimamoto is basically the Platonic ideal of a math professor. He is knowledgeable, clear, funny, and has legible board writing. Math 67 with him was difficult, but also very fun, and it always felt like the effort I put in was worth it.

In Don's class, I never stop taking notes. I find that my lecture notes read like a textbook though. He is a silver fox and generally an extremely helpful and approachable professor. He has all of his lectures memorized! Rumor is that he could walk into any math class at the college and teach it on any given day. The guy is a genious!

Professor Shimamoto can be found in the science center on saturdays, and sometimes sundays too. What he does ranges from things like preparing typed exam solutions, mailing problem sets back to students (with labels),etc. He is a clear professor with a sense of humor and one of the nicest people I have met at Swarthmore.

he is a great lecturer all around, although i didnt have much interest in the subject. His problem sets require alot of time and are very difficult. My biggest complaint was that he didn't post any practice exams before tests, while most NS professors I have had do.

One of the nicest professors you will ever have. Very quick lecturer so make sure you are paying attention at all times. Available to meet with if you ever have trouble. Course material is more algebra based than normal calculus. Weekly problem sets with extremely tough challenge questions. Exams are fair.

My only complaint is his tendency to make odd faces during presentations and his hesitation to correct the mistakes of students at the board. He has a profound understanding of mathematics, a dry humor, and explains things clearly. He chooses instructive homework problems.

I used to call this math 5 slow, for those of us who needed special attention in calculus. Don was unbelievably patient and helpful. Our class was all women (which is not unusual that women have more mathphobia then men) and he really gave me confidence
