Comment:
Dr. Lutz was my Professor at the University of Houston in 2013. He is one of the few educators that I was able to spend time outside of the classroom with. His charisma, academic achievements, political science background and extensive constitutional experience make him a remarkable person and friend.

Had to drop him- turned in my first paper: C-. I went to him for an explanation because his remarks were illegible. He re-read it and showed me the B in the gradebook because but he lost the paper. I gave him an EXACT copy so he could provide feedback. He returned tho copy with a C+ grade. I told him he already gave me a B. He had no memory of it.

Let me preface this rating by stating, unequivocally, that Dr. Lutz is incredibly intelligent. His teaching ability, however, is awful. He is frequently late; always cuts people off; his comments on essays are rarely helpful and typically profane; his expectations are unclear. Class discussions are always off topic. Honestly, he needs to retire.

he is a poor teacher prone to emotional outbursts in class, frequently showed up late, and often told stories that didn't make sense and strayed far from the text book.his comments on graded papers used foul and offensive language meant to make you feel stupid and his grading is incredibly unfair and often incorrect. reconsider taking his class

I didn't have much problems with Lutz. He's a great guy, but this class is just extremely vague as to what you're supposed to do. So you never know what to expect. And attendance really can screw you. Would have liked the class had it not screwed me in the end. Can't say much else other than the grading was unforgiving at best.

He tried to stay on task, but we didn't learn much from the books we read. He's more of a life coach, than a prof. And I don't mean that in a bad way, I enjoyed it; and he's a smart dude. 3 exam Papers over books (3-6 pgs). If you want an A/B in the class: Sit in front, make comments, and have a decent understanding of the books. Pretty easy class.

I was disappointed with Dr. Lutz, he is willing to see you regularly but he could rarely read his comments and wasn't quite clear on his expectations for essays. He makes bizarre and often rude comments. In class, discussion rarely covered the books. Intelligent man, poor teacher. I still don't know what was wanted of me to be a good student.

He is an amazing professor! Unless you have no interest in philosophy or government, in which case don't take him. Essays are easy, he wants to hear your opinion as long as you can back it up well. Only 3 essays and the reading material is really interesting. Would definitely recommend! Took it my freshman year and it was an easy calss!

Dr Lutz is not clear on his expectations for the assignments. He leaves rude comments on the essays and for some reason, does not want you to use outside sources. In class he rambles on about everything except what you need to know. He is a very intelligent man, but not good at teaching. If you are looking to learn, take another class.

Professor Lutz is THE REAL DEAL! If you ever wanted to really attend a class and feel as though you were contemplating Plato like forms of discourse in Government and institutions this is your class. Do not take him if you are not looking to learn. Lutz DEEPLY cares for his students its almost father like. Lutz is a true gem at U of H.

Every class he starts talking about the book that we read and then somewhere in the middle he gets completely lost on an entirely different topic. His comments that he leaves on essays are not helpful whatsoever and are in fact extremely disrespectful.

Ok so Professor Lutz really is amazing. I had him for political theory and democratic theory. His class is not an easy blow off class though. You do need to go to class to pass. Grade is based on 3 essays. The key is to go to class, do the readings and express your opinions! He loves to here what you think but be sure to back it up and explain!

Comment:
Pick another professor for Political Theory, the analysis of books past the first two were very superficial. 3 essays, mandatory attendance, no exams. Essay topics were uninteresting, a lot of class time went to waste. If you're a poli sci major this class won't cut it to give you the foundations you need. Don't do it.

I took Lutz once as an undergrad and as a grad. His classes were inspiring. He made the material come alive. We approached the subject as philisopher contemplating the deep meaning of the author we read. Additionally Lutz will deep over backwards for his students. He looks out for them and is always available to discuss the material.
