I took nothing our of this class and she is very unclear in class. All she does is lecture and never writes things out. Half the time she doesn't finish her sentences or her thoughts. I don't recommend this class

I took her class on Modern China back in about 2006. It was the most work and reading that I've ever done in a History class- more than most graduate courses I've had! Though she is a weak lecturer, she does convey her points well in discussion and I learned a great deal about the subject in the course of taking her class. A very sweet old lady.

Migrations was a horrible class. Martin's lectures are scattered and unimformative. You have no idea where the test questions are going to come from. The group project and family history assignment are enough to pull your grade up to a decent level. But having to sit through the class for an entire semester is almost unbearable.

Migrations in Human History is not a class you want to take. Useless reading on articles, hard to follow lectures, etc. Projects are very easy grades though and she does give extra credit which isn't hard at all. You might like Prof. Martin as a person, as she seems to be nice, but her teaching style is not productive to learning. Tests are random!

Mig. in world Hist. is a MAJOR FAIL!!! worst class i have ever taken!!! she rambles on and doesnt finish her thoughts. She didnt use a book and sent us tons of useless articles we never talked about. We were forced to write our own study guides, however the tests arent too horrible. All in all she will just really anger you. completely useless!!!!!

Really hard to follow because she can't get the tons of information that's in her head to translate to yours, so don't bother paying attention in class. Bring a laptop or something to entertain you while she talks. Lots of readings. I didn't read anything and did minimal studying for tests and got a B in the class. That class sucked, but whatever.

EXTREMELY BORING. I was an AP student in high school and always made very good grades, but her class made me never want to go! Her tests were sort of hard, I never paid attention and Wikipedia-ed everything and still made a B. Gives you weird extra credit.

Very boring, but very nice and helpful. Will give extra credit. Not difficult. Good if you are already interested in China or Japan. She gives perspective on seeing the world through another cultures' eyes (which is fascinating)... she just does it in a really boring way. Puts you to sleep in the morning...

Revision to the ratings posted below. Same comments. Very, very dull to listen to, very helpful, moderate difficulty, sometimes pedantic texts. If you're really interested in the subject, esp. if you know little about it, take her classes, in not, don't.

Incredibly dull to listen to in class. Incredibly dull. However, she knows the subjects she teaches. If you really want to know about China or Japan, take her classes, if you don't then avoid them. If you need anything she will be glad to help, and her class, if you can get past the boring nature of it and the sometimes pedantic texts, is easy.

Dr. Martin is very knowledgable, but has no idea how to present her knowledge to a classroom full of mostly uninterested college students. If you also have a doctorate in history, you should be fine. If not, good luck. She doesn't require attendance, which was good, and you don't really cover anything useful for tests during class time. Review

Very good teacher! Sometimes hard to understand but knows a lot! Sometimes it's like she knows to much! You do portfolios which count as a big portion of your grade, yes they are like high school notebooks so it's an easy A. I recommend taking this course if you are interested in history!

Definitely a tough class. She knows what she's talking about, that's for sure. Sometimes though it's just as if she doesn't know how to teach it because she's so smart. You must be willing to work, and READ. Lots of outside reading, but not that much actual work. Interesting topic, just not my favorite.

Wow, I really like this class, I just don't really understand Dr. Martin. She's certainly up to date on her material, the only problem is it's never really on what you read. Her test arn't bad but you have to study...it's presentaions that will get you. Take it only if your willing to work!

Well, Dr. Martin is a sweet old lady in a lot of ways, but she makes us work our asses off in Modern China. We read about 100-150 pages a week and turn in reading notes. Our tests are take home essays, which is fine by me. Her lectures provide nothing we don't get from the Spence readings. Extra assignments at any time. See quote for teaching.

EXTREMELY HARD and Boring! The class sucked. She gives a lot of reading assignments that are hard to follow and the lectures are god aweful. She is however a very nice woman. She will work with you if you have problems and very understanding. She is a history teacher so you cant expect it to be that good anyways.

This lady is by far thw worst teacher i've ever had. All she does is lecture and give out tons of reading. She doesnt cover the test material very well at all, so you have to read a lot to know what is on the test. i ended up with a B in there, i dont know how, if you study really hard for tests you'll be ok, but i wouldnt waste your time on her
