He's the brightest professor at Oglethorpe, the funniest, and the bitterest. A real gem.

Dr. McFarland is one of the unique teachers who is more concerned with his students actually learning than memorizing information. All he does is talk about the books in extreme depth and it is obvious he really enjoys the works. He is also hilarious if you appreciate darker, sarcastic humor. He is also pretty good-looking for an older guy.

Scared the heck out of us when we weren't where we should have been, learning wise, but I learned a ton in this class and LOVED him as a teacher. Great sense of humor! (and hot to me, but I'm strange!)

One of the best professors I've met. Very dry humor--nothing is sacred.

Dr. McFarland is one of the most entertaining bizarre and informative teachers i ever had, while if you are someone who like linear logical discussions you may become a bit distressed, he is sporatic, humourous, yet intellegent lecture

Oglethorpe is damn lucky to have this man and you're damn lucky to take a class from him. Classes tend to be just him lecturing which I think is fine, I don't want to hear the opinion of some student who deems him or herself a philsopher.

McFarland rocks as a professor if you're willing to put forth the effort and keep up with the work. He prefers lecture but is happy to let students interject with thoughts or questions. Seems somewhat stuffy due to his subject matter but is a very cool guy to discuss subjects with that are indirectly related to class. Beware the mustache!!!

Prone to cursing and blunt overstatement. Should be a classics professor with a higher salary; definitely valuable to the school. He loves his students and wants to help them but his cynicism can get you down sometimes. Has broad appreciation of modern lit as well as ancient. Terrific mustache.

Comment:
His lecture style has little room for student comments, and can get very stale and boring at times. However, his impromptu remarks are solid gold. He once said in class, "Socrates was killed for being an ****." A lot of fun to shoot the**** with after class, he'll even call you a "shithead"

Dr. McFarland believes that you aren't paying tuition money to listen to other students talk. You're paying it to listen to him talk. So if you like discussion classes, stay away. But if you like learning about literature on a level you never have before, his classes great.
