Eh, I don't love Dr. Oliver's teaching but I don't dislike it either. I was very much opposed to his grading system, which didn't allow me to recover from an awful early test. Still, he does usually manage to keep his lectures entertaining, and is always up for a good argument.

Having no partial credit on the Midterm and Final were tough but the material tested was fair. The rants during class can be a blessing some days but can often get frustrating if you're actually trying to learn the material. That being said the rants are usually on the topic of the class or something pertaining to engineering.

I have had Dr. Oliver for Thermo 1, 2 & Heat Transfer. He is an amazing professor and by far my favorite at UT. He gives great lectures, uses the book for exam and quiz problems (similar questions). He is a very intelligent professor, with great practical information related to the material and can off advice outside of the classroom as well.

Dr. Oliver was an excellent professor for my heat transfer class. I had to retake another exam for my masters which involved many thermo and heat transfer topics - passed with a 100%. He makes class interesting with the individual presentations and the life/practical advice. Do not be afraid to go to him for advice other than academic.

Legal Aspects of Engineering. This class is exceptionally useful to people entering the engineering field. It covers everything from patent law to liability and everything in between. Dr. Oliver does a great job and it helps that he has his law degree from Toledo. Read the book, and show up to class and you will learn a ton.

Engineering Analysis Course. This Special Topics class is only offered sometimes but it is the most useful math class I ever took in school. It uses Oliver's personally written book and practice problems to show the practical uses of all the calculus we learned in other math courses. Great class, great professor. Take it, you won't regret it.

This class and professor are excellent. He provides more than one way to complete the class, either though quizzes or exams and homework. Oliver gives detailed notes that actually go along with the book, and the book is very useful. Do the practice problem he assigns and you'll ace his exams. He is really helpful if you go to his office as well.

Dr. Oliver is a great professor to take in thermo-science classes. If given the opportunity, take this professor's class. He will make you interested in the topic of study and this is key in easy success (you wont fall asleep during lecture).

Dr. Oliver has always been one of my favorite teachers and this class was no exception. MIME 4890 was a special topics class or advanced math class, but it seemed so easy with Oliver. He conveys all the material very well and doesn't hesitate to help. Ive had him for multiple classes including thermo 1&2 and it was no different. Take him if you can

Great Professor willing to help students with any problems they have with the material. Very easy to get ahold of. All of the test are over what was covered in class. Gives a great review for each test. To pass the class you must know the material but he is willing to help you get there. Over all one of the best professors I have had in college.

I had economics with Oliver and did not like him. I had him in thermo and loved him. I wish he taught more classes. He continually stresses important points such as the difference between Cp and Cv or the fact that you have to be careful with units. Great teacher that wants you to learn. Do your homework, study, and you will succeed with Ollie

Dr. Oliver is one of the few professors I've had that has actually put hard work into teaching. One of the best engineering professors at UT. Exams and quizzes reflect the homework. Pay attention in class, study, do the homework, and an A is very possible.

I had taken Oliver before for Economics and was very pleased so I made sure I had him for Thermo I as well. Great teacher, not too hard if you take the time to study, do the hw, and learn the material. I ended up with an A w/o taking the final based on my quiz scores. I wish Oliver taught more classes that Civil's could take with him though.

Overall I learned a great deal in this class and my interest within Thermodynamics has risen dramatically. I believe it will be the most useful course within the Mechanical Engineering curriculum, so in return you want the best. I believe Oliver is fair in all aspects of teaching and grading.

Dr.Oliver's lecture is very easy to follow. The homework is not too much and not hard even for guys not familiar with matlab. If you could attend the class and hand in hw on time then you'll surely receive at least an A-. By the way, he's really fair to everybody.

Dr. Oliver is a superb instructor. He is always available and definitely loves his job and students. I would highly recommend him over any other professor. Also, he institutes an "insurance grade", where the student may use the average of his/her quizzes (less 5%) as the overall grade. This protects you against performing poorly on a test.

Dr. Oliver is a great professor. He always tries to teach as well as he could. The textbook which is his own material is also great. The examples he discussed during the presentation were really helpful in clarifying the problems. There is a bit weak point in his work I think, it might be a good idea if he explains the theories more widely before..
