Mooney is the best. His class helped me become a better writer, and I found my love of poetry there. I still go to him during office hours for advice with my work.

While Mooney himself can be quite long-winded and pretentious, you will learn a LOT in his class. He has this bad habit of taking the things you say out of context or repeating what you say (in a much much longer way) right after you say it. But his intentions are good, as is his class. Also, he looses papers sometimes. Overall good teacher.

His classes tend to consist strictly of lecture, but don't think that that means he's not open to discussion! He's full of knowledge within his subject area and is eager to share it. He doesn't use powerpoints, and goes with the general flow of the class. It can be hard to concentrate on over an hour of solid talking, however, but coffee helps.

Mooney is a brilliant professor and is inspirational in every class he teaches. He can be a little bit of tough grader until you understand what he expects, but overall he is instrumental in expanding interest in and forcing deep consideration of literature. His name-dropping is actually a mark of his expansive knowledge, in my opinion.

Fantastic teacher. Reminds you of learning by sitting at the fireside and listening to your grandfather/father. Very intelligent. I didn't see any pretentiousness or name dropping. He's also very kind and fair, and has a sense of humor.

Mooney can come off long winded and like a name dropper, but if you're serious about English you'll love him. He's extremely kind, understanding, overlooks skipping/late work and quiet classmates. He's extremely approachable and very insightful. You won't like him if you can't write.

I've had Mooney for two classes so far and I loved them both. He's a very insightful person and a great teacher who is always presenting different ways to look at a situation. If you're not an English person he could seem pretentious but if you understand where he's coming from you'll realize he's just very well read and genuinely enjoys his work.

If Mooney stopped name-dropping for a minute and actually was in his office/had office hours to speak of, I might feel like he cared.

I find him to be very helpful and pleasant - not pretentious - and I'm taking an intro-level course. I look forward to taking more classes from him and working with him in the future.

I missed the pretension part. It must be young students who feel this. He is a professor, what do you want? He knows his material and makes it interesting. He has a pleasant personality and is fair. The poet meetings are excellent. I rate him a very good teacher.

I agree, he is pretentious, but I've had him for a bunch of classes now, and he does grow on you. He's best at the workshop classes- those were extremely helpful, and his other classes aren't bad either.

It took 3 classes with Mooney to finally understand/like him. Once you get past the pretension, he's pretty swell. I can't really blame him for hating having to teach/read frosh creative writing. Basically, wait 'til you're older, he'll grow on you.
