Duncan is fantastic. His classes are down to earth and are very informative and entertaining. Make sure to read something so that you can participate in class. Be ready to know everyone's name by the time you are done with his class. He doesn't give many papers so the few that he does give make sure to do. Reflective journals are very important

Duncan Nelson was the greatest teacher I have ever had, hands down. I took him my first year at UMB after transferring. I had him for at lest two classes. He is so inspirational and is the reason I am a professor today!!!! Take him!

Mr. Duncan Nelson helped me connect with a part of me through his guidance and teaching methods that I really needed to reclaim. He taught me to become a better writer. His spectacular insight into texts and people, tender discipline, and flexible course structure was really refreshing, exciting and educational. I loved being under his tutelage.

Not your typical English Prof. Almost no readings. He wanted us to write only one record for the whole semester. As long as you can tell your story so that the readers can imagine themselves being in your story, you'll get an A. (And though attendance is not required, he does care if you attend classes regularly)

Best known as the butterfly man, Duncan Nelson is a joy and his casual teaching style and discussion based "unlearning" makes this a class well worth your time. Most work has few guidelines and his only request is to record your observations and emotions throughout reading. He is easily one of my favorite professors.

I'm generally not a fan of English courses but Prof. Nelson keep me awake and interested. He is quite a character; he's a lot like that professor in Dead Poets Society. He sets time to meet with each student individually and really boosted my confidence as a writer. He really likes butterflies-and you'll see that on the first day of class.

Love the man, took every class he offers. Gentle man with a great sense of humor. It doesn't matter what material he's teaching, he's teaching from the heart--his life experience. He's great at opening a person's eyes to writing, and he's taught me different approaches to my own. I spent 5 years at UMass, he is far away my favorite teacher there.

This man is amazing I really learned alot in his class. Not a traditional English class but he opens your eyes to your writings. Hes 80! and a Harvard Graduate. He loves what he does and he cares alot for his students.
