I took this class with some prior knowledge of music theory, and it was very doable! If you have no experience with music, just make sure to spend time with the homework and pay attention during the lectures. Dr. Satterwhite understands this class is for the non-major, so he will gladly help you if you ask!

Comment:

Lots of homework, but he will let you make up any missed homework for full credit. If you do the homework it's an easy A. Tests in this class consist of a written portion and a one on one skills test. The skills tests sound scary, but they're easy if you prepare. I would have struggled without previous knowledge of music, but its doable for sure.

Great if you really want to learn about music. Took this with no prior knowledge & learned a lot, but he moves super fast so you have to pay attention 100% of the time. He also does review classes & makes everyone say answers out loud. There are also skill sections of the tests where you have to go in a room & perform for him. Easy but intimidating

satterwhite was very good at teaching music theory. really, the class was definitely an easy A but theres a lot of homework that u might end up getting lazy with. the tests were easy, no harder than the homework. in lectures, i think he was very good at connecting music theory together and making things sort of click in ur mind

Dr. Satterwhite was very condescending every time I went to his office and when I asked questions in class. I took it no prior music background, and I absolutely drowned in it. I tried my very best to get extra help, but he was very rude to me and not helpful. Unless you are VERY musically experienced, do not take this class. Books are EXPENSIVE!!!

I took Dr. Satterwhite fit Musi 3550, having NO prior music knowledge. I have never had a nicer, better, or more impressive Professor than him. Dr. Satterwhite truly wants his students to succeed and he will work with you as long as you ask. There is a TON of work so be prepared to spend time on this class if you have no prior music knowledge!

Took theory for non-majors. Loved the class and Dr. Satterwhite. He was super clear about expectations/homework/tests the entire semester. Don't skip class - go see him if you do because the concepts build on each other and you'll need to understand them. You can exempt the final if you have an A average at the end of the semester. :)

Loved him. He loves music and makes sure that everyone fully understands what he teaches. He knows some people are there for easy As, but still teaches thoroughly for those who have no musical background. Lots of homework, but it's pretty easy. Always gives practice exams so you know what to expect. Lets you exempt the final if you have an A (90+).

Awesome guy. Understands that if you're taking the class you have an interest in music, and he makes sure to keep the class fun and engaging. A lot of busy work, but if you pay attention and take the time to do it you'll be fine. He's happy to answer any questions and make sure you understand the material.

I came into this class knowing next to nothing about formal music theory, and now feel I can intelligently discuss music on a theoretical level. Dr. Satterwhite is funny and is a musical prodigy. He has no problems helping you out no matter how many times he has answered a question. Daily homework can be a PAIN, but counts for a large percent.

Dr Satterwhite is a really nice guy and really wants his students to succeed. some of the music theory was hard for me, but he was happy to stay after class and go over stuff i didn't get. He is a great teacher and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. he is very knowledgable and a likable person overall. i'm glad i took his class!

Easy class. Do the homework as it counts 40% of your grade (which he checks for right or wrong). But go to class, and half of the class is done for you. The tests come straight off of the homework and study guide. Easy A if you're willing to go to class!

Real easy class, as long as you stay on the HW, at the end of the semester he lays it on thick but it's still real easy. do the work get an A, I only needed like an hour or two, to study for the tests, those are easy too.

Easiest class of my life. I honestly studied maybe half an hour in all the whole semester and had a 100 avg. There is a lot of tedious homework but it's easy if you know anything about theory already. He takes attendance. Make sure you buy new books for this class because they contain worksheets you'll need that may be ripped out of used ones.

Extremely easy class if you have a background in music (im a music minor). Otherwise it might be a little bit of a challenge but no one seemed to have trouble. Tests were really easy. A lot of annoying homework but it makes you learn the stuff. Nice guy and humorous at times. Easy easy A in my opinion
