I had the pleasure of attending his class back in '03 and he was a real inspiration to me then an d still to this day. His humour is sometimes lost on some students but don't worry you'll pick it up by the end of the semester.

Dr. Roberts was my prof over ten years ago and he is still one who stands out. Funny. Caring. Challenging. Willing to consider revising grades. Genuine interest in students. Taught me a big lesson on exam writing.

I took his Winter 06 course and he sure does mumble a lot and is off track with his British jokes. His unclarity could be clarified through his confusing notes. If you approach the method of studying his notes/memorizing, you'll do fine. He boosted me from C+ to B shows that participating pays off. I enjoyed his class others didn't. your decision!

Comment:
If you like critical analysis on things, he is a great prof. However his comments sometimes lack focus and can make things quite confusing. This makes the course feel harder than it actually is. But the grading at the end is fair and rather generous. He's also a humorous and fun character.

Honestly, he's really confusing. Study his confusing notes, and go to all lectures (attendence counts in the end). My experience of this class wasn't too great due to the weather condition and school closures. He had to cancel one of the exams. I wouldn't say his office hrs were helpful. Grade boosters (particpation points).

He needs to teach in such a way that is not confusing for students to undrestand him. Also, it would be better if he spoke more clearly and enunciated his words.

Very Philosophical. Promotes and encourages free thinking but can make this first year corse VERY confusing. Talks a lot about abstract things. Exams are easy if you understand lectures. Does not follow the text for this course.

Dr. Roberts is the worst professor I have ever had. He wastes class time asking each individual student if they understand a concept. He often loses track of time and doesn't give breaks or goes past the time. Do not take this class with him.

This prof delivers a learning experience beyond the course material. Students may succeed in this course by treating his midterms as take-home exams using the given topics as questions, memorize the appropriate notes as answers, and practice writing those answers in under 40 minutes.

Dr. Roberts is a fantastic professor. He encouraged free thinking and taught us not only the how, but the benefits of questioning the foundations of linguistic theory. Well-read, engaging and inspiring, Dr. Roberts is obviously very interested in the field and, most importantly, in his students.

Well, in response to below, you dont need the past midterms to get an A. Just visit him every other week to catch up on material, copy down what he says in office hours, there is a lot of stuff that isn't realli clarified in class, very nice prof though, although be prepared to be questioned

acutally, i think he's a great prof. he's a really nice guy who wants his students to do well! his tests are fair and are well related to his lectures. he might not be so clear in lectures, but the material itself is not so bad. quite interesting when you get it! =) enjoyed this 3 hr lecture class!

if you don't have the past exams, don't take his course! Don't think you can get an A or even a B by just studying hard. Actually study won't help, only past exams do.
