Comment:
Dr. Long really cares about his students but his exams are rough and reading the text book is mandatory. He does not give study guides because they are "an insult to students" this made it hard to focus in on what was on the exam. There is 15 in class activities that make up a larger portion of the grade. Try not to miss more than one class!

Comment:
Dr Long is a good choice for a class on policy. His class involves a lot of reading and weekly assignments over the readings, but his grading criteria is very clear. Most of your grade comes from participation and facilitating/leading one of the classes with your group. Overall, a pretty easy class with a good professor.

I really enjoyed this class and I thought that Dr. Long did an excellent job teaching. You don't have to come to class, however I highly recommend that you do because you get class participation points for speaking with your peers. You have to read the whole textbook, however, thats really the only homework you have for the class.

Class is graded on 15 group activities in class, an ecomap project/paper, and a marriage interview paper. There are 4 exams and they are SUPER hard. Ed is a really great/nice/genuine guy but his lecture slides are a bit boring. Knows his stuff.

Ed is a super nice guy and he's funny, however his exams suck. You HAVE to read the chapters, but even if you do, the questions are so terribly made that the exams are still hard. There are 15 in class activities worth 10 points each; however he doesn't put in the grade if you miss one so you never know if you've missed anything until the next one.

There are 15 group activities in class that can't be made up. Each group activity is 10 points. There is also two projects an ecomap and a marriage interview. There are 4 exams and they are super hard. You have to read the book because thats where most of the exam questions come from. He lectures every class period and they are very dry/boring.

Although this class might be a lot of work, Ed pushes his students to learn. I have never left a class without learning something new. He encourages students to think critically about issues in society and apply them to policies in today's society. Tuition for classes are high and if you take this class with Ed it will be worth your time and money.

Dr. Long never seems prepared for class. He almost never fills the 3 hour time limit and assigns students to lead half of the classes. He is impossible to please and seems to be overly critical of the weekly essays just for the sake of being critical. We barely talked about things relevant to families, instead only critically evaluated articles.

He was a really nice and funny guy, but the tests were HARD. He doesn't give study guides, and your totally on your own to prepare for the tests. The lectures are long and sometimes choppy. If you come to class and read the book its easy to pass though.

WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD IN MY 4 YEARS AT CMU. Never responds to e-mails, unhelpful, incredibly rude and passive aggressive, unclear directions and expectations for almost every assignment. The class was bad but dealing with Ed was worse. I absolutely discourage taking any class that he teaches.

Ed is a great professor. He truly loves his job & students and it shows. He is very sarcastic and until you understand that you might have a tough time with this class. This is senior year class and it should not be easy but rather informative and it is. No exams, reading charts due every week but they are doable. Lots of work but great guy!

Class is not mandatory because he puts every powerpoint on blackboard but I enjoyed going to class because of how passionate Long was about HD. The downfall is his lectures only cover a very small section from each chapter, so that leaves a lot of outside work. The exam mostly consists of what you learn from your own chapter readings and notes

Dr. Long is the rudest professor I have EVER had. His syllabus is not always clear and when you have any questions and attempt to email him he is very short, and rude... that is if you are able to get him to respond If you can help it don't take him for HDF 419

Ed Long is a great professor. He really loves what he does and makes the class interesting with the stories he tells. Most of the assignments are easy but the tests are very hard. He does not explain what will be on them so that makes It very hard to study for them. Lectures could get a bit boring but he was a great professor!

this was probably one of my least fav classes just because of the amount of time it took. there are 2 essays due every class and they take forever to do because the readings are so dang long! don't take this class if you don't have to. he grades pretty hard too. good luck to all who have to take this class. it's pretty awful, but definitely doable

Dr. Long is nice but this class is so tough and so much work! There are 2-3 essays do every class and it's a discussion based class. There aren't any exams because he treats it as a graduate level class - so that tells you something. He's also a tough grader. This class is not for the weak.

This section over the summer was awful because of Dr. Long.He never responded to emails, answered questions, and all the due dates were messed up so we never knew what was going on! When emailed for help, he was always rude, short, and not helpful whatsoever.I will NEVER take Dr.Long again. Even my supervisor was irritated at his unprofessionalism.
