Yes he is tough grader when it comes to grammar,can drag your grades down for just that However, if you meet him outside of class and allow him to check before you hand stuff in it will help you. I got an A because I met him after class alot and did almost all the e.c even if I didnt have to. So its easy to pass and easy to fail. All up to you.

I was afraid of taking professor Davenport because of the ratings, but I got an A in his class and I learned so much from him. Professor Davenport does give a lot of work, and makes the students go to writing center, but in the end any student who takes his class will become a better writer. Grammar is important!!!

He is a very nice guy but he's pretty harsh on his students. I got a B which was the highest grade in the class. Prof Davenport is, I believe, the smartest and most intelligent english professor in the english department faculty. Even though he is very challenging please take his class, he will teach you how to write!! I owe everything I learned in writing to Davenport.

1 of the worst prof in john jay. he makes you buy numerous books that are not even read fully. if your writing is not up to his standards you must go to the writing center for the amount of hours he gives you. points are deducted if you do not go. and lets not forget the take home test and mandatory attendance. i recommend you do not take him.

Came to class the first day and dropped it immediately after. Mandatory writing labs and essays every week? No thank you. Not to mention all the books he wants you to read. he's a good professor because he's passionate about his work. there's alot of writing and reading so prepare yourself and buy the texts early. he's a harsh grader and he won't negotiate about it either. if you're looking for an easy way out...its not him. but nonetheless, i still learned a lot in his class. take the challenge.
