Great Professor, tough but fair. Particular emphasis on Japanese application of Kanji and grammar retention. Though Japanese is her second language she has several decades of experience teaching Japanese and working in Japan; and as a proficient non-native speaker is much better able to relate to the unique learning challenges of Japanese students

She is a fantastic sensei who is more than willing to go out of her way to help you out. If you want to learn japanese, she will provide you with the time, and resources to excel in the class. Even if you are somewhat lazy, she will try to help you get caught up and do better. She is always encouraging, and makes the classes easy to understand.

A truly fantastic prof. She is so helpful to her students and will go out of her way to support them in their goals in pursuing the Japanese language. People who comment here saying she's too strict/ too opiniated, w/e are full of ****. She is simply an honest person dedicated to working hard for her students and she expects nothing less in return.

At first I thought she was extremely mean, but now, not so much. She can be very opinionated. She moves very fast, but is pretty thorough. I kinda wish I had had her in first year. Stay away if you want to slack off, but if you're motivated and like a challenge, she's really good.

Focus on kanji & business situations, not relevant to many students. Inconsistent & unclear expectations, disorganized, repeatedly did not stick to things put in writing & often had to ask students what she had taught. Maliciously sarcastic in many situations; fails to recognize her responsibility despite avg in mid-50s & high drop rate. Avoid.

EXTREMELY DIFFICULT CLASS! 8 HOURS A WEEK. TONS OF HOMEWORK, ASSIGNMENTS, and TESTS!!! Avoid this class if you can. She move's too fast with assignments and unclear half of the time you sit there wondering when the class will be over, it drags on too long. Avoid it.

Amazing professor- Sowka Sensei is very kind, and offers a very challenging class that you are guaranteed to walk out of with an excellent foundation in the Japanese language. I hope I am able to be her student this September again.
