It is clear how much Professor Burt cares. However, her teaching style feels a bit dated. Her lectures are all over the place and her hyper-focus on grammar will come up too often.

Ellen was one of the most generous professors I had at UCI with her time, helping me craft my thesis and reading and critiquing my papers. She was thoughtful, knowledgable and very supportive.

She assigns a lot of reading material. If you don't bring your book to class, you lose a big chunk of your grade. She is really busy and doesn't have a lot of office hours. Expect to not know what grade you're getting, because you only get "check minus, check plus" on writing. Nice person, but has no time for BS. Harsh grader on grammar.

Ellen is great! Yes, she is kind of boring and a bit unorganized in her thoughts but overall not a bad a class. Go to her office hours for help if needed, if not participate in class (she recognizes effort). There are 7 responses and one final paper, attendance is mandatory. Fair grader and always willing to help. Definitely recommend her!

Her analyses of the texts are far fetched and bizarre. It seems like she tries to push sexuality into everything...like a hand fettish in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? I honestly didn't agree with anything she said. I stopped paying attention, the discussions were creepy. Boring, but most English classes are. I would not recommend.

Easy grader as long as you show that you care. Go to her office hours because she will literally tell you what to write and if you write what she says you'll get anywhere from a B to an A, depending on how you execute it. As long as you do your work, you will pass the class. Also, she grades on improvement so don't add to your draft, fix it.

Super helpful during office hours. Pushes back every single essay and canceled class twice. Fair grader, does not give anyone lower than a C if you do the work.

I think Professor Burt means well (she's actually very helpful and personable if you make an effort to attend office hours), but her lectures lack clarity and lucidness. I also feel that she could be more encouraging in regard to students' contributions in class. She comes across as condescending, although I don't think she means to be.

Completely lost in her own little world. She must be let out of some sort of dark cave to teach, because she seems to have no idea of how to communicate with terrians. Her own speciality has only added to her isolation. She is unorganized and will drone on about the most irrelevant things.

The worst class I have ever had. She is terribly disorganized and she teaches seemingly off the top of her head. Makes even interesting authors seem dull. Lectures are impossible to follow and paper prompts were unnecessarily complicated. Seriously, as boring as it gets. Excrutiating class, but on the plus side...not that difficult.

Take this class! Prof. Burt's class was great! The reading list was not especially long, and the works were all very engaging. The lectures were very clear and dynamic. I was a bit worried about having to do a presentation, but even that turned out to be fun! I can only surmise that the negative comments on this site are from mediocre students.

Yes, class was very slow moving, the lectures were unorganized and she often spent too much time on certain (i'd say sometimes trivial) ideas of language use in works, but she is insightful and is always friendly. Her ideas are very obscure as well as her paper topics which make it difficult to know what she wants, but she grades fairly easy.

Watching paint dry is more interesting than her class. She tries to sound sophisticated but when you get down to what she's actually trying to say, she makes general points and she never answers her own questions. If you want to commit suicide, just lock yourself in this class for a day.

(Poet in the City) Her easiness of grading is pretty fair. Easiness of the class? Not so much. Although mostly interesting, prepare for a heavy reading load. It's almost ridiculous the amount of reading she wants done in a given amount of time, especially when you have like two/three other classes to study for. And like others have said, COFFEE!
