The first thing that comes to mind about Dr. Sutherland is inconsistency. It is difficult to know what is expected of you, how much you are supposed to do, what you are supposed to study or really anything else. Her classes are consistently avoided even by Spanish majors, and as a Spanish major, I might be dropping my major just to avoid any more.

We kind of just focused solely on culture and not enough on language. The culture information is interesting, but I wanted to learn the Spanish language and she really didn't help with that. I also had no idea of how we were being graded, and I struggled with some quizzes because we were not really taught the information before being quizzed on it.

Sutherland is a mess. She does whatever she wants in class and expects her students to somehow figure out what quizzes / test will be on. The book for this class was $200 and we NEVER USE IT, all we do is read lyrics from spanish songs and try and figure out what they mean. Extremely unorganized, unprofessional, unbearable. Avoid at all costs.

Shows very little respect or understanding for her students. Shows up late daily, speaks almost exclusively Spainish in a level one course. Rarely seems to have a comprehensive lesson plan. Avoid if possible, there are far better options if you are seeking to fill out your language requirements.

I've always loved Spanish language and culture and was excited for this class. Boy, was I mistaken. I promise you will want to gauge your eyes out. I did more work for this class than all of my others Combined, and still my lowest grade! You have no idea what to expect, when things are due, what she wants, nor grades. Prepare for Mental Breakdowns!

Sutherland is a brillant woman and knows so much about different culturebut as a professor she is the most unorganized and confusing professor i have ever had. never know when anything is due, amount of work she expects certain days is at times unreasonable. Doesnt hand back grades papers but if you go to office hours she is very helpful.

Worst prof I've had at Muhlenberg. She's nice I guess, but I'd rather have a mean professor who's good at teaching. Will spend entire lectures discussing cultural stuff and just assumes you've learned actual test material from the book. Hey Erika, you know what the helps most in bridging the cultural gap? Being able to speak the language.

SOOOOO annoying she gives so much homework that people in Spanish 4 cant even do!! it is ridiculous she is so unorganized and shows up late every class. Gives unfair tests because she tries to make it so you cant cheat but the tests are totally different one has word banks and the other doesnt she is jus so bad at teaching and loves mexicans

Sutherland is pompous. Her orginizational skills are completely lacking and as one of her 'advisees' she was TERRIBLE . . . at every turn i was given wrong information and bad advice. Stick with Marx or Trauger, you'll learn more and you'll actually enjoy class

She knows a bunch, and if you get on her good side you're set, BUT, if you write a paper stating anything other than what she thinks you'll get a B. Say exactly what she says in class and you'll get an A. Not best method of learning. She made me want to drop my Spanish major, very upsetting, I loved spanish before taking her class.

I hate this woman..and I dont hate people. She not only is disorganized in class, but she is rude to students when they answer incorrectly. She is not friendly and is very critizing. She made me have 2nd thoughts about being a spanish major! i will NEVER take a class with her again-go with Marx.
