One of the most no-nonsense professors you will ever encounter, but the chance of a lifetime to learn from. Gruff exterior, but willing to go the extra mile to help you learn. Holds study sessions, available constantly for help/questions, is very clear on what he wants from students. 12 years ago he changed my life.

The absolute most important thing to do while taking a class of his is to READ THE MATERIAL. If you don't, forget it. He will eventually catch you on something you didn't read His knowledge of the subject was deep and knew how to answer all questions asked. Can grade exams a little rough. Must read everything for the exams. READ READ READ the material and you'll do fine.

Excellent professor. Very intelligent and challenging. He's not easy but is very helpful and excellent clarity. If you want to learn, he's a great professor to take. Definitely have to be prepared for every class.

If you want an easy class, Umar is not right for you. But he is without a dobut the most friendly, helpful professor in the entire department. He's not going to hold your personal views against you or treat you unfarily like some of his fellow professors do. He's simply wonderful. Only those who aren't willing to work for their grade dislike him.

He's actually a pretty nice guy behind his hardcore appearance. He's extremely knowledgable. But he does have a photographic memory, which would add to his intelligence. Don't piss him off. Don't come in late. Do your work. AND READ. And you'll be fine.

I love this man, but I can see why others might hate him. He is very difficult, but if he knows you're trying your best and doing the readings he will be fair with you. His middle east class is an eye opener...definitely the most important class I took as an undergrad. He will push you hard, but it is worth it.
