There are no tests. Essays are easy, but you need to use the readings from class, and if you don't do them (which most people don't) it can get hard when it comes to the essays. Class discussions can be interesting. He is a really nice guy and cares about the students and school. Brings in treats during movies. Also field trips are fun!

Comment:
Maltzaman is enthusiastic about the course. I learned nothing; he just went with "emotional appeals, controlling discussions, etc." is how manipulation happens. The final essays (12 pages assigned 2 weeks out) sucked; you were supposed to only use in-class readings, so the quality went down because you're trying to shove enough readings in.

Lots of readings and group projects. Professor showed us a number of videos that illustrated experiments. Final was take home, but required one to have done reading.

Comment:
His class was my one regret. Political Manipulation sounds great on paper but Maltzman ruins it. There are no actual written tests just a paper and a ton of group projects that he throws at everyone towards the end of the semester. His lectures were boring and were just him reading word for word from the hundreds of pages of readings he assigns.

Really cool guy. I had him for a dean's seminar and it's really cool being able to interact with him on a more personal level. Well respected in his field and a very interesting lecturer. Would definitely take any class with him you can.

Some parts of the class were very interesting. Very nice and easy going professor. This class was the best opportunity to meet administrators at the school. Make sure to do the readings even though they don't seem necessary. They help for the final paper and are interesting. Would recommend.

pretty useless individual as he fell insurmountably behind in his lectures. ergo all his exams come with a huge curve. discussion sections were outright painful, my TA made me grit my teeth every time i saw him

Yes, there are curves. That being said, I still got a C in the class. His exams are IMPOSSIBLE. Multiple choice questions may have seven possible answers (all of which seem to be correct) and he chooses an essay out of about ten essays that he makes you slave over for days only to forget everything you knew by the time you have to write it.

This class is terrible. And the Professor, who is charismatic and intelligent, does not make it any better. The course material he choses is terrible, bland, and repetitive. The essay prompts are not college level. The quizzes are pointless. The professor doesn't keep up with the material in class. The tests are vaguely based on material.

Kids seem to get upset because they actually have to do the reading. His lectures are entertaining and informative, but he doesn't always cover as much information as he should. There are MASSIVE curves.

Good PoliSci class. Exams were tough; but generous curve. Lectures were entertaining and TA great. I liked the guest lecturer (a former DNC chair). He did this study in class that showed that buying GWnotes does not help. The guy who owns the service is a friend and was pissed. But, his data and evidence was interesting and almost convinced me.

Lectures are pointless. Reading is mandatory for exams. Exams are hard. Good amount of reading, pulls abstract facts from reading and puts on exams. Average was around a 60%, A's were given at 75%. Loves the sound of his voice. Quizzes online, 1 paper, 2 exams. He is not helpful at all. One of those classes you teach yourself. Hard grader.

You don't "discuss" so much as he talks and you facebook. Really frustrating course b/c literally impossible to do well. Focuses on random points in history with no logical chronology to help guide you. You won't learn so much as you'll be stressed with trying to read everything - and you have to because of random test questions. Just avoid.

The lectures had relevance to current events but going to lectures is not necessary to do well. There is A LOT of reading--best to split it up with at least 3 people. Midterm and final are very difficult but a decent curve helps. If you stay on top of reading and prepare for the tests you should be fine.
