Prof Johnson is a little bit intimidating at first, but after you get to know him, he is amazing. He may be tough but he wants you to succeed not only in his class but in life in general. He helped me declare a history minor, and I'm sad this class is over because he really helped me understand what he was teaching and he is a great man in general.

By far the best professor I've ever had! He's a real great guy and he cares about his students. Yes, his standards may be a bit more advanced then most, but I promise that if you put in the work he will take notice!

Johnson is a professor that you shouldn't pass up. Extremely knowledgeable, strikingly wise, and surprisingly good humored. The material can take you by surprise, because the way he teaches is incredibly fast-paced. Pace yourself in your reading, because the quizzes, books, and presentations come in increments. He gives his all, so you should too.

If you don't read the books assigned, you won't pass. He doesn't go over content in class, but he gives hard reading quizzes every class. In you want a good grade in the class, be prepared to teach yourself. He grades very hard on papers and tests as well. He's a funny guy, but I did not enjoy him as a prof.

I made an account with this website to post this review. Fred Johnson has unrealistically high expectations. If you don't plan on devoting a full-time job's worth of time to his ONE CLASS, then don't take it.

He is a great teacher if your willing to put the work in! He can be intimidating at first, but if your having any trouble at all he is more than willing to talk to you about your grades and what you can do to improve. He is a wonderful professor that knows a ton if your will to put in the time.

TERRIBLE. The worst professor I have ever had at Hope College. He does not respond to e-mails nor does he give proper feedback (especially on content). Grades down because he will randomly decide he does not like a word you are using. Difficult to commmunicate with as he is overly defensive. Avoid him if at all possible.

Professor Johnson is extraordinarily knowledgable on a variety of topics and engaging in class. There is lots of reading and participation is mandatory. He genuinely loves the subject, and challenges his students to think about history in a variety of ways.

This class is a usless representation of US history. All he does is make you read a ton every night and in class give you insanly hard reading quizzes. In class he rarly talks about anything pertaining to what we read for the day. We actually skipped the Revolutionary war! The class is US history before 1877. How can you skip the revolution?

An extremely interesting professor to listen to. But, the class was planned poorly, the syllabus was revised 4 times and I felt like I didn't learn anything about modern European history. Also, I had no idea how I was doing in the class until I got my final grade. The class was hard for a 100-level and, in my opinion, not worth the hassle.

Excellent prof and person. Expects a lot from students but works to help you help succeed and understand the material. Good lecturer who keeps you interested and forces you to look at things from different perspectives. If you are willing to work hard, you will learn a lot from Prof Johnson

Worst professor ever. He is a great in class but rountinely fails people. Gives no feedback and doesn't answer emails. All of the reading quizzes are redicously hard with obsecure quotes. Most people on my class were intelligent but still struggled to pass. Must particapte intensely to pass. Avoid at all costs.

This class was ridiculous. He never was able to meet with me when I needed to discuss my grade and he never got back to me about grades. He also lied about the grades he gave his students. He wasn't consistent when it came to the syllabus; he probably changed it about 10 times throughout the semester. I didn't learn new information from the class

His class was very difficult. He also did not do well in explaining the material. It is if we read certain material for class and then he lectured ona whole new topic. Also, his quizzes are impossible. It's not a class where you can skim the material and expect to do well, you have to read every single sentence. It's hard and not easy to pass.

I had him for an online June term. He was so hard as far as what he expected completed. He gives out ridiculous amounts of reading assignments. Whenever I emailed him for assistance he would email me back in third person, and he rarely responded to my emails (??) I thought this was the worst class I have taken at Hope College.
