I was lousy at math until this unconventional teacher inspired me. I took Fred Lane's classes all the way to pre-calculus, which got me into UCLA. With his help, office hours, extra credit, I got A's in math. LAVC will never be the same without the spirit of Fred Lane.

I took his Elementary Algebra class 20 years ago. I was afraid of it but I dug in here. I wanted to learn and I thought he was terrific. I wonder if he still does the quiz at beginning of class. "If you learn one thing in my class it will be value of 5 points." I got an A. Loved it learned a lot. Changed my whole idea about math.

this guy is a joke. he makes up his own problems, some of which no one i know understands how to do. buying the book is not worth it. taking his class is not worth it. don't bother. and if you happen to be enrolled in his class by default like i did, drop the class and find a new teacher.

Mr. Lane seemes like a nice guy but he is not a very good math teacher. He does not teach from the book, he makes up the hardest problems possible,and even my tutor believes if she took his class she would fail it and she got an A when she took it before. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!

I took him 12 years ago. I think the problem is he also teaches (used to?) differential equations and calc 3 to students at Grant Highschool. At LAVC he is teaching adults math classes they should have taken when they were 12 years old. I do not think he likes the typical juco student taking remedial math. I do agree with the other comments.

IM pretty sure that mr Lane is a very nice person. BUT when he teaches, its backwards!!The first day he gave us homework but didnt show us how to do it.when i ask questions he blows it off. not purposly i think. alot of people dropped his class that i know,and i think he should go about teaching differently. he is a good man.horrible teacher!

He is a very nice man, I like him and felt bad that I had to drop his class. He knows his material in depth, but doesn't know how to teach it or doesn't want to teach. The first day of class he was doing work from Chapter 10, the end of our textbook, and this class is supposed to start with Chapter 6. A FRUSTRATING TEACHER...

Frederick Varilek Lane teaches something that is rarely taught, algorithms(a set of intructions). He love mathematics from a geometric point of view and squares. He is a professor for those who love and dream of mathematics as a life style. An alumn of Van Nuys High School Class of 1951. He was a young math teacher at San Fernando Senior High School and had the late Ritchie S Valens as a student. He said that Mr. Valens had two Cadillacs in high school. He teaches as a retired teacher.

I only just started this class on Tuesday of last week and already I cant stand him. he doesnt follow the book, and is teaching things that we are "supposed" to know, but everyone is lost... dont take any class he's teaching... I AM SO CONFUSED!! I took this same math in High School, and he's teaching in "his own method" and shows us the longest way to do a problem instead of an easier shortcut kinda way...

Lets not forget that Mr. Lane is a very nice man. I would have him as my grandfather any day, but, dont get me wrong. I dropped his class too. He does not follow the book and claims to be teaching pre-algebra but it seems more like algebra 2! Dont worry there are easier teachers out there!!

The worst professor ever!!!!is more concerned with boasting about his education at UCLA 40 years before, and the fact the most common grade in his class is a W.Would give random examples which most tutors couldnt figure out.They immediately knew I had Lane as a Professor.

Entire class discouraged. He pridefully says only 5 out of 40 made it to end of last semester's class, and they were all B's & C's. Very high WD rate. Unclear. Doesn't follow book. confuses everyone. Current class intends to make complaint. Horrible!
