He is great at teaching advanced topics, but makes basic math extremely tough for non-math majors. Exams are very difficult. Don't ask questions, unless you want to get lectured about how you should have learned math in high school.

WARNING: Do NOT take this class (Math 155E) under ANY circumstances. I have dedicated hours upon hours of studying, gone over and repeated homework problems, gone to tutoring every day and still failed. This class is not challenging; it is impossible. I admit I'm no math whiz, but the amount of effort I have put in does not equate to my grade.

Teaches class like you already know the material. Tests are unreasonably difficult. Weed out class for engineers. I think he had a 70 percent fail/drop rate. Students went in with years of calc experience and still failed.

You can tell he knows what he's talking about, but can't say so that students understand. He assumes you know calculus before coming into the course. His favorite phrase to use was "you guys should already know this", especially when attempting to explain a new concept. Had I not taken calculus in high school, I would have struggled to pass.

Comment:

Talks down to students that seek help or aren't already amazing at calculus. Very vague and halfhearted in his teaching. Difficult to deal with out of class regarding class matters. Would not recommend.

Prof. Ganser is a very tough teacher. Lectures aren't usually very clear, so a lot of effort outside of class is needed. One good thing about him is he focuses on you knowing WHY something happens, rather than simply learning how to get from the question to the answer.

He tries to explain the concepts in a theoretical way instead of an up-front way and that makes it very confusing. If your interested in the theories of math, he's the guy for you. If your looking for a straight-on approach, I'd recommend someone else.

Tends to assume you already know the material. I find a lot of his lectures confusing and vague. As a person he's pretty funny and likeable, but he's not the best professor. I would be failing without the TA's help.

Comment:

Ganser thinks everyone enters his class knowing calculus already. Outside help, such as a tutor or a study group, are incredibly helpful. He wrote the departmental tests and made them killer. He will talk down to you if you make a mistake he thinks you should not make, even if it is before he teaches the concept. 410 Would not recommend.

Hardest class I ever took. No matter what professor you take, you have to study a lot. He makes all the Calc 155 engr exams. The average passing rate is below 50%(department). Although this semester 75% of the students in the department are failing. I did all the hw and studied for weeks and still failed. Now taking Calc for the 3rd time. Good luck

Gary can not describe what he is teaching and may understand it himself but he won't answer questions if asked. He takes off most points for a one point mistake.

Professor Ganser is a good teacher. He thoroughly explains everything. He teaches by doing examples. He will walk you through how to do a problem, and then he will give you a similar problem to do yourself. I was in the Engineering section of MATH155, and Ganser would relate what we were learning to other engineering disciplines, like physics.

This was one of the hardest classes i have ever taken and when i saw Prof Ganser for help he told me i would probably fail, or i would be lucky to get a C. He is a strait shooter and does not care if you fall behind, but if you know the material well and can keep up with the super fast pace then he will teach you alot.

Great professor and extremely smart. I never saw him reference to the textbook once this past semester. He really emphasizes on, "What if we were the first ones to try and do this math problem, then..", which to me, is a great way to learn harder subjects of math. Tough class, but no one said college calculus was easy. Two thumbs up for old Ganser!

Ganser is a very tough professor, but if you put in time and effort to do the homework you will do fine in his class. Take advantage of the practice tests he posts online and engage in class. A lot of people dislike him because he is a tough professor, but you will learn A LOT!

very difficult subject made even more difficult by the professor. He is very smart, however he is incompetent at teaching. Laughs at you in class when you ask a question he considers stupid.
