One of the best professors at Roanoke College! Not only is he brilliant, but he is one of the rare professors that takes his time to make his lectures, homework, and tests effective. He adjusts the speed of the lecture to accommodate those who are struggling. He is inspiring enough that he could persuade students to become chemists!

Great professor, he makes organic fun even though the subject is a make or break you subject. I wanted to come to his organic class. Be prepared to give it your all because he'll make you work for the A. If you really want it, he'll reward you. I really understand organic after taking his class.

He was not organized. To me he was rather cold and he never talked to me like he did to other students. Sometimes I thought he was discriminating me over the other students. I respect but I think he has a lot of baggage he should sort out.

Dr. Hollis is pretty funny and engaging and good at explaining concepts in class. However, he is often VERY unhelpful if you try to go to him for help or ask him questions outside of class. He has a tendency to make you feel stupid for asking questions, and has even made fun of students in class several times. He's very tough, not in a good way.

I just took a the summer class for organic chemistry and it was very difficult. We sped through mechanisms like mad and he didn't have time to explain them all, so we had to do it on our own. He is a great professor, but evil and a strict grader.

Great teacher, however you should only take his class if you really want to learn and understand organic chemistry. Those who don't do well in his class are those who are lazy and don't read the text or work extra problems, instead they go to other teachers to explain the material. If you are not lazy and really want to learn O chem take Dr.Hollis

Took O Chem over the summer. Dr. Hollis comes off a bit gruff at first but he is a nice man and highly intelligent. I would recommend him but you better be serious about the subject it is no joke.

Dr. Hollis's INQ 240, chemistry and crime was great. I heard alot of bad things about him but I was pleasently suprised how great a professor he was. He explains everything great and is willing to help alot. Also he is so interested in the subject he makes everyone interested and helps them understand even if they don't want too.

this guy can teach very well no doubt about it, but he really needs to realize that o-chem is already harder and he doesnt give us break with lot of crappy work that he assignes, his writing prompt assig. are such a waste of time, also the who EPIC crap is waste of time as well, don't ever ask him a question, he will make U feel like you are stupid

Very Hard class but good teacher who explains the information in a very well manner. Sometimes he seems inapproachable but he is willing to work with you. Be prepared to do a lot of work and maybe even stay up late doing it, he sometimes doesnt send take home quizzes till the night before its due, so dont have a life outside of this class, or sleep

One word, evil. Often sarcastic and arrogant. This aside, he is a wonderful teacher who is very talented, but expects more than any other prof. at Roanoke. Pushes lots of work on you, but you learn the material eventually. Often went to Dr. Oetgen for help instead of Hollis. Oetgen Rules!

I agree with the rater below. Students do not realize how truly lucky they are to have organic chemistry with such a talented individual. His lessons flow seamlessly from one subject to the next. He will prepare you beyond what is needed for MCATS or graduate school. Be prepared to wholly invest yourself if you desire an A or B.

Hard class, but he KNOWS how to teach it. It's a well-structured class. Don't ask for help from him, though, he always seemed like he was belittling me when I asked for help. Study like hell. As a person, he's very hard to read, but he's a frickn genius. He's a bit pompous sometimes.
