I loved taking Koob's classes. They weren't easy, but he was a great lecturer and I was super interested in the material. If I needed help, he was accessible. I was lucky enough to take a 199 with him and I will say he was very intimidating to me for some reason. Maybe because he's a genius! One of the smartest individuals I have ever met - really!

One of the most challenging classes I've taken at UCSD up to date. Also one of the greatest professors I've learned from. Extremely intimidating class with its grading scale and nearly impossible content. However, he is very organized and his lectures carry over from year to year (definitely invest in lecture notes from a previous year). Take him!!

The whole class is podcasted (so you don't even have to go to lecture). There is one midterm, one final, but if you get an A in the final, you get an A in the class. He is a very interesting (and clear!) lecturer. Class was a little difficult, because there's so much material to memorize. Overall, Dr. Koob is one of the best professors in UCSD!

Comment:

Addiction, Drugs, & Mental Disorders: the lectures were interesting, but be warned that it is a LOT of material to absorb. Flash cards definitely help and keeping track of Professor Koob's "hint-hint-nudge-nudges" during lectures is important. He knows what he's talking about and explains things really well. Good for psych & biology majors alike.

koob is awesome. He grades based on 100 mc questions total (40 MT and 60 final)which is a little scary but he's extremely clear and a pretty good lecturer overall. the reader is small and he picks articles that reflect the lectures. I'm definitely taking classes with him again!oh and he's funny too :)

Doesn't do +/- on grades, which was the only thing I didn't really like. Material gets a little repetitive after a while but he's a great lecturer, podcasts, and invites several great guest lecturers. Definitely recommend him.

Koob is funny and pretty easy to listen to. Material got repetitive. Had good guest lecturers to change it up. Tests were all multiple choice, and fairly easy. Grade based off of 40pt midterm and 60pt final, but if you got an A on the final, you get an A in the class (regardless of midterm grade).

Class was not what I expected, but Prof. Koob is very funny&though I sometimes had a hard time focusing in lecture, his course outlines covered everything very well. I noticed that a lot of his hints were omitted on the final. The guest speakers were interesting, but don't seem to have experience doing college lectures, so it was hard to follow.

Took his Drugs class & Impulse Control Disorders class! Definitely take this teacher!!! Koob is amazing, crystal clear, does everything he can to help his students. He even podcasts, but show up to class to get lecture notes! hint hint nudges are important! Not a cake walk but with a little effort its def manageable to get an A! TAKE HIM! :)

I took both 179 and 188. One of the BEST professors i have ever taken. Make sure you listen when he says, "Hint, hint. Nudge, Nudge." It means it is an exam question. The midterm and Final are not so easy if you do not attend lecture, and his class is interesting anyway. If you get an A on the final, you will get an A in the class.

Good professor and interesting subject. My biggest recommendation for this class would be FLASH CARDS. I did poorly on the midterm, but flash cards saved my life for the final. Know every drug, what it is, what it does, every fact about it that he says. If you use flash cards, it's really not that hard to learn them all. Glad I took this class.

You can tell he had many experience in the field which made his lecture interesting. Understands the needs of students, no textbook needed, all notes and reading were all online. Podcast, AS lecture notes..everything! Overall, an easy psyc class i think. Just study his notes hard!!

Say it with me "I WILL TAKE PROF KOOB FOR PSYC179 OR PSYC188" trust me, you will not regret this decision. Was NOT a cake walk, but was the best class and prof ive ever taken. Definitely requires a lot of studying, but worth it in the end. all very interesting info, and if you get an A on the final, you get an A in the class.

He's not half bad. Class is interesting b/c it's about drugs. Lots of guest speakers- he's a 'busy guy' Study for the midterm and final every week- keep reviewing your info b/c you will need to KNOW it. If you only miss 6 on the final you get an A in the class. Not bad- interesting but takes effort.
