He has an ego, no question, but he knows his stuff & insists you learn it. If you don't want to work you will not do well. If you show an interest, work hard, and do a reasonable amount of work you'll be fine. Any perceived favoritism is based on his ability to snuff out the BS of half-hearted efforts from the work of real students. He's good.

This prof is more interested in his research than he is in teaching his classes. He makes the students do most of the teaching for him. If you aren't one of his favorite students, you can be assured that you'll probably get a lower grade no matter what.
