Comment:
Had him for both OE language, and for OE literature. He is a fair marker, and a clear lecturer. Made Beowulf enjoyable, and OE relatively fun. Take good notes in 340 and you can get a very good mark. Think critically and write clearly and you will do well in 343. 9am OE doesn't sound like a lot of fun, but I think it was worth it!

Prof. Wieland has an incredible knowledge of Beowulf, and he also understands the difficulties of teaching it. He is extremely helpful if you ask for help, and was crystal clear on his expectations. You will not regret taking his courses!

Professor Wieland introduces Old English in a way that makes it a lot easier than it actually is. He knows how to teach the grammar effectively, and is always willing to help students that need the extra help. This was a great course taught by a great prof! Take it if your interested in the beginning of English.

Professor Wieland is pretty good! I'm having some difficulty with the course (Old English) but he is pretty good at explaining - the course just takes a loooot of memorization. On the bright side, he is approachable and charming so he's easy to go to if you need help.

I just finished my final for this course-it was definitely worth taking. One midterm, one paper, and one final- so the work load is not heavy. He gave me a page and a half of commentary on both midterm and essay. Extremely friendly during office hours. Lectures are well-organized and interesting. The tests/grading are reasonable. highly recommended.

This is NOT a literature course, it is a language course. I only say that cause I made that mistake and felt like an idiot afterwards, but I decided to stick it out and I'm glad I did. Gernot is a great professor and has a great sense of humour, but spending two months on Old English grammar just isn't exciting for me at 9AM, but he knows his stuff

I disagree with the previous review. Did not find him "[d]ead easy" at all. Does not offer much feedback on essays. He is one of those profs who does not accept opposing points of view. Make sure you attend every class and speak up, even to ask a question-- otherwise your grade will suffer. OK prof but probably would not take anymore classes by him

Dead easy if you attend class and do the miniscule amount of reading or tiny assignments asked of you. In his marking, I have only ever had cause to call him over-generous (but I'm not complaining).

Gernot Wieland is very important, however his classes are dull and quite dry. He is a huge repository of knowledge in the field of English literature but his tests are hard and his class is dull. I would not recommend it.

Different style. He doesn't analyze the text but goes over the broad issues, focusing on historical aspects. Wasn't my cup of tea, but it was interesting. He does have high standards. My average certainly dropped after taking this class. That's not to say I wouldn't recommend him. He's a great prof.

A very good teacher! Makes the learning of a dense subject like Old English both fun and relatively painless. Sometimes expects a higher level of perfection than I would consider fair, but nonetheless a very entertaining lecturer.
