Comment:
Berryman was responsible for developing Chico's design program into one of the best in the nation and his reputation in the industry is substantial. Berryman students get portfolio reviews and get hired --- period. Our profession would have been better served had the whiney naysayers on this site changed majors and made room for more real talent.

I was in Gregg's first graduating class ; we were so well prepared that all but 1 of us had design jobs within 3 months of graduation. We ended up at places like Landor or Nike or started our own companies. Those that left the absurd comments above need to check the lengthy list of nationally recognized designers developed under Berryman's watch.

I do not understand why Berryman has such bad ratings. He is an amazing designer and instructor. He encourages students to try their hardest and in result, people tend to have better design. If you don't try in is courses, your grade is reflected. I suggest everyone take at least one upper division design course with him, he's phenomenal.

He is the absolute WORST. I almost dropped out of college because I thought I would have to take another class with him. He does not constructively criticize your work he degrades you and is just mean! I am going to school on a full ride scholarship for graphic design and he just tells you you don't have the skills instead of actually helping.

No email. No online resources at all. No access to lectures. He uses slides and gives you copious amounts of imagery to memorize, but there is no way to access the information after lecture. You are expected to memorize his lectures which often go over class time, to study for tests that probably have completely different information on them.

It's been 15 years since I took Gregg's class but I wanted to add a comment here to those considering the design program. This curriculum is difficult for a reason. Gregg is good at weeding out students who do not have the dedication and enthusiasm to make a career in design. This is one of the reasons why I give preference CSUC grads when hiring.

He is tough! I'm an A student and I had to study at least 12 hours straight for each of his tests to get a high grade on them. You MUST come to class and see the slides he shows because the majority of the test is identifying the designers' works. Good Luck :)

Berryman is a hard teacher, but once you get past his lower division class he's fine. He gives students who haven't pass portfolio review a hard time, but once you're in the program he is much nicer. Don't let him get you down, he's just trying to weed out the people who aren't dedicated to graphic design

c'mon... Berryman is awesome. students need to take time to get feedback from him and visit his office hours: if you do this, you are taking advantage of valuable advice and direction! Berryman has a passion for the design program and is extremely supportive of his students. He's been around and done a lot; he's a kick in the pants and a good guy

Avoid this professor at all costs! It does not matter how hard you work in his class, if he doesn't like you your grades will reflect it. I'm a hardworking student and never have I been treated this badly by a professor. If you want to succeed in his class ask to see his grading rubrics before turning in projects. FYI: He doesn't grade by points.

This guy needs to retire. His explanations are about as clear as mud, and he seems to change his mind a lot without telling us, so we turn things in and he acts like we're all idiots for doing the wrong thing. If you're nice to him, he'll start to like you after a while. Don't try to write him emails - he'll never reply.

Definately plays favorites. Decides who will pass review before review even starts. Seems to think his class is the only class you have. Very demanding, and yet, inconsistant. Therefore confusing. If he doesn't like you or your work, you suck as an artist. Did you notice that your book is written by him? Awful instructor.

Worst teacher in the comm department by FAR! He picks favorites and never tells you the same thing twice. He is the worst teacher to critique your work and cant use a computer. Im not sure, but the last time I checked, most professors know how to use computers, especially if you are a graphics design teacher....FRANK ARMSTRONG, take his place...

History of Graphic Design- he picks his favorite students and just hands out grades. I would be surprised if he even graded the exams or projects. He is very old fashioned always unavailable, which sucks because he is the major advisor. If you have to take this class, he is the only one who teaches it, so good luck!
