Greg really cares about what he's teaching, and understands the importance of hands-on experience and unconventional learning methods. He's big on notes, but encourages creative notetaking which means you can doodle your notes etc.

Pay attention, ask questions. Greg is a great guy. All you have to do is put a little effort in and think critically. The tests and paper can be daunting, but if you take the time and do the required amount of work, you'll have no problem. You will probably get something out of this class.

A really great and passionate teacher and that is greatly appreciated. This was a tough course for me and he really makes you work for your grade. Expect well thought out and long lectures, research papers and small weekly quizzes.

Greg is very knowledgable and expects you to do a lot of analysis. The assignments are very clear, and he allows you to retake tests/quizes. There is minimal in class participation required (big class so someone else will answer lol). Assignments involve some writting, but honestly you can get away with not reading the textbook if you go to class.

I had such a pleasure being part of his class! Well prepared lectures, energetic and occasionally funny. The weekly quizes encouraged you to read which made you learn a lot of content by the end of the week. Informative and would like to be in his class again

GFR is such an inspired instructor who clearly has a passion for his job. Not only does he plan out amazing lectures, but he is amazingly helpful outside of class when students request help or advice on his assignments. Yes, he does make you write a research paper so lazy people go elsewhere. Definitely one of my favorite instructors here.

Greg is an excellent teacher by all means. Though his papers and tests are very challenging. He is very helpful and wants the best for all of his students. He could have better study guides. Lots of writing is involved with this class.

Yes, he has a PhD from Northwestern, but what makes Greg such an excellent instructor is his genuine desire to help is students learn. Assignments and readings are hard, exams are very challenging, and his expectations are very high, but by any means possible take his class. He and Onur Ozturk are the best teachers at Columbia.

I hated him. He was very knowledgeable and his lectures were helpful, but he expected a lot out of us and didn't return the favor with his own hard work. He was unnecessarily strict with grading and was not consistent with it at all. I regret taking his class.

I love having PhD as Professors and I wish Columbia would hire more. Greg is intelligent, passionate, and he forces photography majors to realize the importance of theory and critical thinking in regards to photography. I wouldn't take this class with anyone else. And, he's really cute :)

Greg is awesome. I learned so much in this class, and he managed to keep things interesting through the whole 3 hours which is not easy. One of the best professors I've had at Columbia. He wants you to think critically about history, not just memorize dates & slides.

This was an interesting class but don't take it in the morning unless you are a morning person. There are three sets of journals due through out the semester on articles we have to read. The final is a book about your own photo history. Pretty easy class if you keep up with the homework.
