Fantastic teacher. Hilarious and makes lectures very laid back, almost conversational. Not a lot of information provided in lecture notes, mostly teach yourself unless you are good at learning via him talking. Learn very valuable skill of R form the master himself. Not graded on a ton, doesn't post grades online

He is a nice person, but Biodata Analysis was a ridiculous class. We are graded on such few things, most of them being at the end of the semester. The class is teach yourself style and the lectures are fast and I got nothing out of them. The final project is worth about a third of your grade, and if your group isn't good , you're screwed.

Dr. Hartvigsen is by far the best professor I've had/probably will ever have. He is so impressively intelligent, while also being down-to-earth and helpful. Choose this class over an "easy-A"!! Lectures are very interesting, math-heavy but not horrible. There is a lot of R, but he is so willing to help. Hard tests, but not impossible!

Dr. H is one of the best professors you could ever have here. Not only are his lectures entertaining and interactive, he is one of the most approachable people on campus. He really truly wants all of his students to succeed in ecology and biology and will help any way he can especially in office hours. Would suggest always reading the textbook!

One of my favorite professors ever. I think people are scared to take eco with him bc of R, but there are only 3 homeworks with R and they are grade boosters bc TA's are there to help you. He gives you all his old tests to look at and that helps a lot with tests

Harvigsen was my favorite professor and really got me interested in Ecology. His lectures are bit scattered but are definitely entertaining. He isnt afraid to joke around and mess with the students, especially when teaching the topics he enjoys. I would definitely take him again and I am taking data analysis only because he is teaching it

Love Hartvigsen. He's really smart, a little wacky and blunt, and makes class interesting. At some points (in this course specifically) you'll probably wish that he'd be more helpful, but in this data and computer heavy course you have to learn on your own. Makes the course tough, but gives you everything you need to succeed and lays it all out.

Love Hartvigsen, he's a mix of a being really cool and at the same time really smart and a little awkward. Expect to do a lot of modeling and R with him--he literally wrote the book on R that the college uses for intro bio lab. Tests are very reasonable and ecology modules (R homeworks) clearly laid out with a lot of help available.

Hartvigsen is one of the best professors at Geneseo! Make sure you show up to class and take good notes in addition to slides. He gives you the book. Go to office hours w questions, he is always super helpful! R modules can be tough but if you go to the tutor they are doable. Class always put me in a good mood; he is super funny and chill

Best and most useful class I've ever taken at Geneseo. If you have the choice between this and another, easier stats course, take this. You will certainly give up the easy A by taking this class, but you have a chance to get an A in a class that will undoubtedly help in the long run!

The best professor I've ever had at Geneseo. Great and interesting lectures that are also funny! I learned so much from him, and his organization of the class is excellent. If you want to learn a lot, work a good amount, and really enjoy coding--TAKE THIS CLASS!

Hartvigsen is the best! His lectures are very engaging and he makes the class very fun. He definitely makes his tests challenging, but as long as you go to class and take notes to supplement his lecture slides you'll do well! If you ever have a question just go to his office hours (and get there early, he's very popular)!

TAKE HIS CLASS! Fantastic! Lectures are fascinating. Hilarious, passionate, caring, helpful; an all around great guy! This was my first semester at Geneseo (transfer student) and he made the semester for me. Tests are hard. Looking at past exams helpful; can't rely on it. Go to office hours and reviews. He provides textbook. Don't skip! Cute too :)

Be prepare to go to class every time. If you skip one class, it will be chaotic later. The lecture slides are not clear, just pictures and graphs. There are no descriptions in the slides. R modules are really hard, if you don't know R, you will have a hard time. He has his own textbook and he doesn't test much from them.

He is the best instructor I have had thus far. Don't take the class with him if you are looking for an easy A. Tests are tough! But I genuinely enjoyed his lectures. He is an interesting guy! He's very helpful if you go to office hours. Don't be afraid to ask questions. It'll probably have a significant effect on your grade. And DON'T skip classes!

Majority of this class seems like an extension of Bio205: tested little on ecology and mostly on R. If you don't know R well, you won't do well. Class lectures are also very chaotic and he goes on many tangents. Tests on something brought up once, although provides past tests to study from. Cool person, but needs better organization as a teacher

Enjoys teaching, but doesn't like the students. Mostly because this course is required for bio majors, he holds grudges. Started out ok, as the semester progressed he became more spiteful of those skipping class. Talks about how he doesn't like certain people, which takes away from material. Most do poorly on the 1st exam. Political and vegetarian.

His classes are usually the more enjoyable ones in my schedule. He livens up the class by giving us anecdotes and asking us about our day. A very confident professor, he requires you to take note of his teaching style and what he tells you to study for the tests. To do well, you have to be genuinely interested in the class you are taking with him.
