Very difficult to understand. Very smart, so it is hard for him to explain the basic concepts to students that are necessary to do well on the exams.

I got a 5 easily on AP chem but had to work hard to get a B+ in this class. It is VERY difficult. However, if you put in work, you should be fine. Dr. Ferg is INCREDIBLY HELPFUL! He knows the subject extremely well and is ALWAYS available to answer questions or help you out! I loved him in that regard. He wants his students to succeed... but STUDY.

His lectures are incredibly dense and sometimes boring, but if you actually go to class and pay attention you will truly learn chemistry in a way you never have before. His tests check for true understanding, so studying doesn't help too much. Overall he got me way more interested in Chemistry than I was even though it was incredibly difficult.

Well, by far one of the worst professors on campus. Knows the material but cannot teach it. His exams do not relate to any of his notes, the online homework, or the textbook. He makes up random problems for the exams that do not make any sense. Very difficult exams and also, a tough grader. Miller and Ho should completely take over CHM 30 AND 31.

Comment:
The lectures are pretty skippable if you read the textbook, since literally 95% of what he says is in the textbook and likely explained better. However, perhaps you should actually go to lecture because his exams are really tough, and anything he puts on the board is "fair game" for the exam (very true, he put an obscure orgo problem once).

Pretty solid chem professor. Attendance is not required and lectures can be kinda dry, but I would recommend going because he covers a lot of material. The exams themselves are BRUTAL. He's the single hardest grader I've ever had - no partial credit. But since the exams are curved and the lab isn't too bad, the class is pretty decent overall.

Professor Ferguson is a brilliant man and he is an excellent lecturer, but his exams are difficult because he tests understanding over rote memorization. However, he is very generous with partial credit. The practice problems are immensely helpful. Overall I liked both him and the class but you need to do your work or you will be out of your league

Excellent teacher. Enthusiastic and loves what he is teaching. His lectures are very well-done; he packs in tons of material in every lecture. NOTE: do the practice problems he assigns! his tests are very difficult otherwise. He tests that you understand it more than whether you memorize everything. Hes also very generous with partial credit.

He's a great guy but his tests are ridiculous. The labs are what will save you. I have no advice towards a better grade but you'll learn a lot more than 025 and is worth it if you just want a better understanding and dont care about GPA

just do the practice problems. Read the text wherever the problems apply to the problems; you don't have to read anything else. Going to class helps. For the exams, practice problems before going over your notes.

The class is an absolute nightmare. You will sit through every lecture thinking how easy the material is, then take the tests which are impossible. He's pretty laid back, but the tests are nothing like what the he sets out to teach in class, very difficult to break out of the 60s on tests.

Professor Ferguson clearly is knowledgable in his field, but he has extreme difficulty in conveying this knowledge to his students. I dreaded going to lectures and rarely left them with any idea of what had been lectured about. While Professor Ferguson is extremely enthusiastic about teaching, he is much more suited to research than the classroom.
