Professor Caginalp is very kind and reasonable. His exams are extremely difficult, but not impossible. If you really listen to him he tells you from the start that exams are concept-based. The exams are a direct reflection of what the final will be like and give you an idea of the format and style of questions. If you take him, be prepared to work.

I took calc1 with him and I has really hard time at the beginning. His test are very hard, but they prepared us for the final, which was much easier than midterms. You also have to attend each lecture otherwise you won't be able to pass the class. The concepts that he explains during lecture are sometimes cannot be found somewhere else.

After taking another professor for the same class you can see he falls short. He comes off condescending when you ask questions. The homework and quizzes aren't like the exams. He just goes over theorems instead of teaching the main concepts. He also assumes you come in with knowledge of proofs. Only take him if you have strong proof skills.

First test is hard because the exams aren't really based on the homework and are more theoretical/based on notes. 10% Attendance grade and 5% homework grade with noncumulative exams 25/30/30%. Notes are provided online.

Dr Caginalp is THE best Math Professor you can have at Pitt!He is extremely knowledgeable and considerate. If you have a confusion, just go to his office, he will have the answer(especially for mathematical finance). He is super helpful and kind in office hour. Math is not the only thing you can learn from him. High recommended!

Extremely good professor. He's the best math professor I've had at Pitt. His explanations were amazingly clear. But the best part of his teaching style is he really emphasizes the big ideas of mathematical thinking. The tests were very fair with no surprises at all. An absolute joy if you love math.

midterms are on the ez side. You get tons of time, but make sure you show you verified your answers if it's non trivial. Departmental final was much harder and I felt like I did bad, but it didn't seem to pull me down much in the end.

I had him for MATH 0413 and 0420, which were essentially the same class, anyways. Interesting guy, great professor. Makes writing mathematical proofs somewhat tolerable. You might be bored out of your mind during class, but there's only so much you can do with the material, so don't blame him. Tests were relatively easy, right from lecture and hw.
