Comment:

Very funny and intelligent professor who will do anything to help you. That said, attendance is a must and the notes are very scattered. Also there is a lot of reading, but tests are essay over key concepts so it's possible to skim the books and do ok. A very interesting class overall, but will take some effort.

Fairly flexible. Grading criteria is arbitrary. Lectures are fairy interesting however, he doesn't cover all material stated in any sort of order making note taking difficult. He doesn't favor asking questions in his lectures or after class, will refer you to readings every time. Avoid taking this class unless you plan to spend 6+ hours a week stud

Knows so much about topics he teaches, very smart man. Although his lectures jump around too much. Had a hard time staying on same topic and getting through it completely. He also talks very quietly. I record lectures and sit right in front of him, when I listen to it again, i can barely make out what he is saying. Lots of reading too, 8 books.

Pretty good professor. Attending classes and taking quality notes are a must. He is caring and willing to help you during his office hours. Cravens is very knowledgable and his classes were very helpful to me as a current history instructor

Comment:

Cravens is a very knowledgable professor and quite a charismatic lecturer. The material is interesting. Note taking in his lecture is ubiquitous and it's sometimes difficult to keep up with the volume of material. This class is a "big picture" concept class with two essay tests and a very demanding recitation requirement. I loved it anyway.

He knows so much about the topic of American Culture and Society. Anyone willing to work and pay attention can get a solid A easily. He makes history interesting and is a large reason why I am considering changing my major.

this class has a pretty ridiculous amount of reading, but the exams are pretty easy if you do it and go to lecture. unfortunately, his lectures are boring and he is hard to understand sometimes (he stutters and has terrible handwriting).
