He is incredibly intelligent and truly inspirational. Some may find the lack of traditional structure of his classes/lectures overwhelming but he does it to give space for open thought and interpretation. He is easy to talk to and very fun to listen to in class. Definitely a tough grader but gives amazing feedback!

He really inspires his students to do well. He doesn't keep class average because he wants each student to improve on ourselves. He has been very helpful and understanding, especially for international students. I definitely recommend anyone who is interested in IR should take his class once.

One of the most interesting classes you'll get. Lots of reading and a hard paper. Not incredibly helpful, but it's a joy to listen to him. Grades are tough but fair. I highly recommend the oil class.

What's all this bad talk about Barkey? he was one of the best profs I ever had at Lehigh. Sophisticated, interesting, challenging. Sure, he pushes you, but isn't that what it's all about?

Professor Barkey taught a very interesting course and I had a lot of fun. He was beyond unhelpful when it came to his paper. After several meetings that went nowhere the paper came out terrible. To add injury to this insulf professor Barkey decided to tell me that I needed more focus and a metric which were what I had gone to see him for very bad

Prof. Barkey is an extremely intelligent academic, but not the greatest professor. He is easily distracted and often misses the point of his lecture. To succeed in his classes you MUST DO THE READINGS. Read, take notes, re-read. Know them cold. You can get a good grade if you do that. He's a really cool guy and very helpful...take his class.

WOW was this class a lot of work but worth every min. Professor Barkey is an expert in his field. Reading could be overwhelming at time and class discussions could drag on if students were not prepared. Professor Barkey truly wants to teach his students how to think almost to the point of beating heads into the wall. Highly recommend for any class

The worst professor I have ever had. It would have been nice if he taught the correct material for the course. Don't bother working hard since your efforts will not be rewarded. And better yet you will get insulted on a daily basis. Registered users, respond to this rating

he gives off the impression that the class is only based on a few, easy-to-grasp concepts, until you get to the tests and assignments and realize that if you haven't worked your ... off trying to make up for his shortcomings in teaching any of the material you actually need to know. he's rude to his students and quite **** as well.

My advice: hold the questions til after class. Seriously. If you ask him anything remotely dumb or obvious during class - and IR 90's a big class - he'll disassemble your question and make you sound ignorant. In his office he's more approachable. Otherwise, a very intelligent and well-spoken professor.

I had him for IR90: The Conflict in Iraq back in '03(the beginning of the war.) I am now an IR major. He's just amazing. Brilliant! I was impressed. He's not chauvinistic as said, I'm a female, impressed by how helpful he was to me on several occasions, and I did reasonably well in his class.
