Comment:

Had Dr Fan for DSP. Certainly the hardest class that I have even taken in my life: material is extremely abstract, and he has very high expectations. Final curve is so average is around C or C+ it seems. My only advice is to work hard at the beginning because the class just gets harder as it goes on. He does make himself available for help though.

Comment:

You will have to teach yourself DSP. His lectures are nothing more than him pointing a equations and literally saying things like "you have this and this and you get that" No conceptual learning here, just lots of work, oh and quizzes every class. Exams and final are 68% of your grade. Curves a 35% to passing. Absolutely horrible at teaching.

Flipped course, posts lectures online, gives a daily MC quiz over random content in the video IE Slide back ground color and how many times did his phone ring. Tests always have an obscure twist that makes them significantly harder than the homework. The course material is abstract and he doesn't make it interesting. not sure if its possible to.

Comment:

Good professor. If you pay attention in class you will do well. His tests are short and simple, straight to the main points of the course. It was nice that he allowed us to make a summary sheet for each exam. When you go to his office hours he is very helpful and understanding.

I found Dr. Fan to be enjoyable and his exams fair. His exams cover what was emphasized in class, not the small details mentioned in the text book chapters. Furthermore, he was understanding of our workload and pushed back assignment due dates as per the class' request.

Comment:

Prof. Fan is a bipolar professor. One day he will be cheerful and connect with students and give hints for the tests. The next day he will yell at the class for not knowing anything and wasting their time. He makes lots of math mistakes in his teaching, and even did his own test incorrectly when he posted the solutions. Short, hard exams.

Comment:

Fan is very rude and cruel to students. He gives difficult exams with only a couple questions that are always the hardest or most random of the material covered. The bulk of the lesson is rarely tested. He also degrades students and acts like they are spoiled brats, even though we are the ones who are paying his salary. Avoid if you can.

Avoid if you can. Had him for Network I and Signals I. For both classes almost all his tests were 2 questions, and pretty much only points for correct answers. He is cranky and unapproachable. He will tell you over and over that you are "wasting your parents money." Spends at least 5 minutes per class complaining about students not trying enough.

The worst professor I have had at UC as an EE major. He is arrogant and rude to students. He expected a prior knowledge of topics never taught and got angry when we told him we did not know it. Also made us buy a second textbook which we used for only a few days. If you don't watch the board the whole class he will call you out and embarrass you.

Comment:

Very demanding professor who feels the need to prove EVERYTHING. His first exams were pretty easy, but his finals came out of left field. Still managed a B in both classes, even though I and most of my friends feel as though we failed the finals. Dr. Caffery is a much better communications professor in terms of explaining concepts.

Great prof, great sense of humor. He will answer any questions without hesitation. Does his best to get the class involved/awake enough to pay attention. In networks 1 he wrote on the overhead (bad) but now he works problems on the board (good). Challenging but not to the point of being demoralizing.

Fan speeds through the material, but will stop at any point requested to clarify something. Our class nominated him for Prof. of the Quarter. Exams were not too bad, the HW doesn't change from year to year. Very fair grading. One of the better profs. I've had at UC

Lousy prof. Reads out math to you in class. Makes the most exciting concepts as dull as him. Zero intuition in teaching style.Very unfriendly and unhelpful. Hates questions in class. Has a frown on his face all the time. One of the worst profs here in UC.

Some students do not like him because he is a very demanding professor. I find him to be extremely fair in his tests and quizzes, he knows the subject material well, and cares greatly about how his students do. Prepare to be challenged though

Very hard class. Repeats homeworks so everyone cheats. Helpful when you ask questions in class and at office hours. If you don't ask questions he'll just keep flying along and you'll get really lost!
