Very disorganized but absolutely amazing. This is a professor that you can go and have lunch with to discuss your thoughts on the material without it being awkward. I am not a history major and I took a 300 level for a gen ed but I dont regret it at all as he is absolutely phenomenal.

Porter's lectures just ramble on and go from point to point. His test are essay test in which you can write about anything and your grade depends on how much you write and how much he likes you. If you want a crazy class and funny time taking. Be warned you do have to work hard for the grand Rally.

Dr. Porter (W&L '54) was my favorite person at W&L. He was my advisor, friend, and professor. I graduated in June '05 but I will always remember his unfailing kindness, generosity, and genuine interest in me. His lectures can be a bit boring, but you will always remember them. Porter knows all kinds of history back to front: take his classes!

To be honest, I was only interested in taking this class because I wanted to experience the legend that is H.P. Porter. My favorite times were when he'd start laughing at something and we didn't know why, so everyone would nervously join in. And he definitely doesn't hate girls. Ladies: do the work and you'll be fine.

Porter is amazing. It's a truly entertaining class; he's basically insane but awesome. For the most part don't take him seriously, most of the time I had no idea what he was talking about. And he doesn't hate girls.

Take Dr. Porter for the experience. His spring term seminars are a fun time. He grades really hard...but the recommendation letters you could get from him are gems. Still takes me to eat. It's true about meetings in his office (long). Great, quirky guy. Knows the most random historic trivia.

Dr. Porter is one of the legendary old-school professors at W&L. He is an alum, as well, Class of '54. A definitely ally of the students against the CRATS. A little weird (down jacket year-round, midnight walks, odd laugh, etc.) but these are endearing traits. He is also a genuine friend to many.

Absolutely insane. Truly worth taking if you want to view a prototypical, crazy haired man who has been short-circuited by academia. Tough grader, but he's exceptoinally knowledgable and, if he likes you, will treat you like a legacy, and perhaps dine you

One of the most boring profs. ever but is very knowledgable and you laugh at him more than with him. If you go to his office with a question rest assured that your question wont be answered but you'll be held there for 2 hours.

he is a truly strange guy but don't let him scare you off. he's very "old school W&L." he means well. don't take him too seriously. he will assign a ton of reading but you don't actually need to do most of it.
