Comment:
Contrary to most other students of his, I found Dr. Campbell's class to be one of the worst I've taken at Pitt. I find his accent to be forced and extremely distracting, and his manner of speech comparable to a kindergarten teacher's. He took no initiative to respond to my emails and did very little to help me with issues I had with the class.

one of the truly great personalities at Pitt. he is the type of man who seems to have done everything and know everything, which makes him a pleasure to listen to. and his accent makes even biochemistry seem exotic and exciting. his book of notes is so helpful and he records every lecture. tests are hard, but ok if you know EVERYTHING in the notes.

Lectures not mandatory. Read the lecture notes (typed by him so u don't need a textbook) about twice though. Also listen to his mp3 recordings of review sessions if you can't make it. Very helpful, interesting topics, not just bio but how it pertains to life. He makes really obscure questions on his test- make sure you know EVERYTHING in notes.

All notes for the course are present in the notes course packet you'll buy before the semester starts. The packet definitely helps, but Prof. Campbell comes up with the most abscure, ridiculous test questions of any professor I've ever had. Some Q's are even seemingly unrelated to biology and things I can't recall from lecture. Not bad though.

Iain is a great, funny guy. The class is 150 people yet he still somehow remembers your name. Exams aren't bad as long as you put the time in to studying. Lectures aren't mandatory but if you pay attention you'll do much better on exams. This is the first class I really had to work in, but frankly I didn't mind it.

I LOVE THIS MAN. I had him for Bio for Non-Majors 1 & 2, and he's fantastic. He cares about his students, the lecture notes are extremely comprehensive, and he's so friendly and entertaining, and extremely smart. Take his classes.

Best class ever, and my personal favorite teacher of all time. Learn how alcohol is made on a molecular as well as a commercial scale. Also studies many other interesting and groundbreaking commercial processes involving microbes.

WHAT A CHARACTER! Very entertaining, Craig Ferguson meets Sean Connery. Has fun and makes jokes but gets down to business quickly too. Lectures arn't necessary but if you pay attention it will dramaticaly lower how much study time is needed. Notes not necessary because he's done it all for you. Great class and prof for people not good at science.

He is the best prof. at Pitt but his tests are extremely difficult. Its really hard to get an A but a B isn't too hard to get if you study the notes he gives you. REMEMBER EVERYTHING IN THOSE NOTES!!! He tends to ask questions about the smallest details in the notes. His tests def. make you think!

This guy is an amazing teacher, but man his tests are hard! He will tell you everything you need to know, but make sure you learn EVERY last detail, not because all of them are on the test...but because some of them are and not knowing them will really hurt your grades. But the professor is interesting and funny, and really cool and approachable.

What a great professor! Three tests in Biology for Non-Majors, and they're all super easy because of the LectureNote textbook. No real textbooks, attendance in class is not mandatory because you have everything you need at your hands. I took maybe one page notes the entire semester, pretty good class, highly recommend ++.

Super boring class. Focuses more on history of biology than actual biology. His tests are difficult and he does not prepare you well for them in class, however he has many opportunities for helping students in the class. Be sure to go to class on days before breaks and the day of big sports games becuase it's the only time he gives extra credit.

great teacher highly recommended... tests are kinda difficult... but there are 5 tests so you can make up for 1 or 2 you bomb by doing better on the others (which is what i did)... always around to help... helpdesk office hours are really useful so even if you don't go to class you could study the material on your own and go to the helpdesk w/ ?'s

Such a sweet, interesting, knowlegable man. Always there to help. Interesting subject leads to a fairly easy way to fulfill the science requirement. Makes his own notes that are much more helpful and interesting than a normal bio text. Highly recommended.

Very nice, though unfortunately somewhat boring at times. Would recommend against taking this class if you have a tendency to fall asleep in class. Not extremely difficult, but going to class helps a lot, as his asides give you a better idea of what's on the test than the class notes at times.
