I've only ever had Kourtev for higher-level classes (VLSI design and advanced VLSI) but he is definitely a very challenging, intelligent professor. Would have to agree with some of the comments about him being a little arrogant--I think he expects you to really try and think things through for yourself. He will help you if you demonstrate that you've tried EVERYTHING that you can think of, but he's still going to make you think for an answer. Take this class if you think you want to design chips...
