I'm a 44-year-old journalist and writer, and Dr. Balcer was one of my professors 25 years ago. He was a tremendous influence on my writing. Does anyone know if he's still in the Winchester area?

Dr. Balcer is what freshmen need. They need high school writing beaten out of them. This man grades based on you. Not on any normal grading scale, but what you are capable of versus what you are giving him. He will not hesistate to make you rewrite something with potential a million times until its right. He will also not hesitate to tell you to throw something out. If you want to learn, he will teach you.

He knows his material and knows how to present it to us. But assignments aren't made clear hardly at all and tests/quizzes are extremely unfair. He asks specific questions and when the test is returned, he had deducted points, most of the time half of the points allowed for not answering a questio

Dr. Balcer is one of the worst teachers I have ever come in contact with. He was unsupportive of those who wished to excell in their writing, and I found his grading methods harsh and unfair. Any "help" offered on essays was vague and of little

The kind of English professor that schools need. Both understanding and demanding. Dr. Balcer upholds the standards of his courses while still realizing that we are students and have many responsibilites outside of class.
