Great professor. Very knowledgeable and approachable. The course may be challenging but you learn the important academic skills through discussions. I recommend this course for graduate level students.

Constantly referred back to Thailand and Bali as if we all already have background knowledge. The TAs were helpful, well 1 was. Very confusing teaching style. Wasn't really sure what notes to take down and had dense readings. Didn't feel like an introductory course with his teaching style.

He is knowledgable but doesn't teach well. His expectations are unclear. Tests are hard. There's a generous curve cuz everyone does so poorly, but that doesn't make me think any better about the class or professor.

I don't recommend this class. Bilmes is very knowledgeable but does not know how to teach well. His quizzes are way too detailed and difficult. The first quiz average this semester was around a 62%. Lectures are boring and he talks soft, quiet, and slow so not much is learned/understood in class yet they are tested anyways.

Really nice professor. Kind of quiet but nice. Class is based off three quizzes, three essays, and a final exam (final is not cumulative). If you read the books and listen in class it should be fine. A lot of the quiz material is on the books so make sure to read them!

Watched a lot of videos in class. He applies the Anthropology perspective to some broad subjects and primarily tests on the readings alone. There are only a few essays that are leniently graded. Is definitely one of the better professors for an introductory course.

Keep up with readings. Going to class helps cause he puts some questions in the exams from random things he mentions in the class. Exams are easy (3): about 25 questions, taken with it on the classroom screen, essay due with the last 2 exams.

Not bad. Such a passionate guy. A little hard to hear him. Sometimes it can get boring. You watch a bunch of films.

He's a really nice guy, but even with a microphone you can't hear him very well, so sit close to the front. Also reading is VERY important since the tests and essays are based off of reading and in class lectures. He doesn't take attendance but if you want a good grade go to class, videos he shows in class and some information are on the finals.

He's a really funny guy, if you're paying attention. Great class, especially if you just want to get a nice overview about the area of study and need the Foundations-B credit.

Need to go to class but no big deal. If you do the readings you will be set and they are pretty cool. Bilmes is a nice guy too! If you are taking anthropology, which i suggest, get Bilmes.

I loved this class! Bilmes was funny, smart and above all understanding. The only homework you have to write is for the exams which are easy as long as you read or go. I even enjoyed the readings and I have never even been in an Anthro class before. Now, im majoring in it. Other professors I heard were bad but Bilmes made this class great. TAKE IT!

its not too hard but not that easy either... its pretty hard to pay attention in lecture because hes not that enthusiastic or anything.. TA's grade the essay, so grading kinda depends on the T.A. you have. Also, the tests are not too bad because its curved..

To me a very easy class. I forgot to study for an exam once and 3 not a essay and I still make good grade. Most funny out of all the semester professor. Reading is a breeze, just read the part you like and skipped all the useless ones. It does help to sit in front of class.

Dr. Bilmes seems interested in his field, but doesn't appear to enjoy teaching people about it - especially in a 100 level class. If you need a FG course, take it with someone else.

So at first i thought this dude was a total creeper. He talks very softly and is a little awkward acting. After a while, however, he kinda grew on me. He's kinda funny. His class isnt very flexible but is pretty straight forward. Definitely go to class and read the text. You'll have no problem if you do that.

He is a nice professor who knows what he is talking about. I thought it was extremely hard for a 100 level class. There was a lot of reading from online and 3 texts, he gives no extra credit, he doesn't allow makeups for exams. His lectures are not online and he sometimes goes too fast and his lectures are not from the book. No study guide either.
