If you need to complete your tier II English and looking for an easy A, I would recommend Kerkering. He is a tough grader but if you pay attention to lectures you should be good. He is very lecture heavy and his voice can be a little drowning. If you show up and pay attention to the lectures you will do fine. Not too many pop quizzes.

Kerkering is super clear on what the class is and what you need to do to pass. He gives you all the tools in lecture, and is available for help outside of class. The actual class time is pretty boring as he mostly talks the whole time. The books are ok, not the best reads ever but not the worst. He's a great choice for an english course

One of my favorite professors from Loyola. This class requires a lot of reading, but if you read and listen in class you'll be great. He is incredibly kind, gives good feedback, and tells you what he is looking for.

Nice guy, great books, easy grader. I was a big fan of this class. He's very intelligent but makes everything easy to understand. A lot of reading, but nothing too crazy. I'd highly recommend him.

I'm only 5 weeks in, but Dr. Kerkering is by far one of my favorite professors ever. He is absolutely brilliant. The lectures are engaging and the books are well chosen. He's incredibly kind and helpful, too. It would be sad to make it through Loyola and not take him.

Professor Kerkering is very nice and it is clear that he is passionate about the material he teaches. He cares about how you are doing in the course and always makes himself available outside of class. There is quite a bit of reading but the books were good. Not hard to get an A if you read most of the books, go to class, and pay attention.

A LOT OF READING. Make sure to start early so you can keep up. Begin papers early so he can give you his feedback on them. He gives pop quizzes so try to make it to class every time. He is easy to talk to and is always willing to help. Time management is key since there is about 120 pg of reading a week and a weekly response. But its a fun class!

I took Exploring Fiction with Kerkering and really liked his list of readings. For his writing intensive class he assigned about 100 pages of reading per week and weekly papers. Also gives pop quizzes, three longer papers and a midterm. I got a B+ in the class, which could've been an A if I had time to go to office hours.

Loved his class! Get ready to read and write. Helped me look at novels in a whole new way. He is so passionate and informed about the topic, its infectious. Can tell he really loves his job. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Professor Kerkering is really helpful and will make himself available to you(open to making appointments,if you can't make office hours)

He is extremely nice and caring towards his students. As a lecturer, he is on the quieter side which can make class seem boring but he is a fair grader and does not ask too much of his students. He just likes to see understanding of the material and growth throughout the semester. It'll be an easy A and youll read some really great novels!

Comment:
Very dull lectures. Says "um" and "uh" A LOT, at least a couple hundred times each lectures (no joke - I counted). His verbal tics and lack of charisma that many professors have is very irritating. Has no command of the classroom. Discussions are only slightly productive and insightful. Readings are extensive.

Comment:
Class based on reading novels, weekly responses and writing papers. There is no final exam, but a long paper to write. If you meet with him about your paper, he gives excellent feedback and edits it through with you, giving comments and suggestions as he goes. This guarantees a good grade. He is not super interesting during lecture though

Comment:
Kerkering might just be the nicest human being you will ever meet. The Class was American Lit 1918-1945, and what's hard about it is every novel is like "I was in the War and now I'm disillusioned with the world" so the subject itself was dull but he tried hard to make it interesting. It's easy to like totally space out and do other things.

He is one of the worst professors I've had at loyola. I do not recommend him. Although my grade wasn't that bad, I found his class extremely uninteresting. He had no structure and said "um" every other word. I didn't learn anything and he was an extremely hard grader. Take a more interesting UCLR professor, don't waste your time with him.

Minnesota nice- the worst kind. He's a nice man, and will tell you that he thinks the papers are fine...when really he doesn't like them and will slam you on the grade. He's afraid of telling you what's wrong to upset your feelings but then gives you a poor grade. This class was FAR too time consuming and his attitude towards poetry is excessive

Took this class as writing intensive. Was very interesting and professor was engaging in class discussions. There was a response to readings each week, 1 midterm exam, and 3 papers. No final test. As long as you go to class and are able to come up with paper topics, this class is great!
