Don't take this class if you're not willing to do the work. Jack pushes all his students to be better and doesn't let them get away with laziness or thinking their writing is hot stuff. He's a tough grader, but your writing WILL be better for it. Class is super structured and well managed. Don't take if you're just trying to get an easy A.

Jack is an awesome teacher - he really knows creative writing skills and how to build them, and will not coddle you when discussing your work with him. However, listening to his comments can really help you to improve as a writer. His lectures are hilarious and he's very friendly, though he meanders off topic very often. LOTS of writing.

It is a workshop class, and the "lecture" days are just conversations with him. It is a really fun class and I've learned more about writing in this semester than I have since 7th grade.

Do NOT take this professor if you write "genre" fiction. He is NOT helpful and looks down on anything that falls under "genre". You have to rewrite your story five different times throughout the semester, and with fairly unhelpful prompts (changing the pov from 3rd to 1st). Doesn't really give feedback until the last revision of the piece...

This class is called "story time with Jack," and it's a must have for someone who wants that picturesque classroom experience. Jack is a natural born storyteller and often his lectures break down into stories about his experiences, they are both entertaining and educational. He treats you like you're slightly more advanced than you actually are.

Awesome professor! Id take his class again and recommend him to anyone. Assigns a lot of work, but very doable! He is a self-proclaimed "easy-grader" and he always gives great feedback and assistance. He brought us cookies and donuts numerous times over the course of the semester. Helpful, interesting, quirky, definitely a great professor!

Jack is a very sweet person but his teaching style is not for everyone. First story is due 2 weeks after class starts and has to be re-written 5 times. No real feedback with the stories until after the final draft of the story has been turned in, which is frustrating. He seems to imply that genre writing is a lower forms of storytelling.

Jack is great, like most others have said. I reaaaaaaally like that he gives his opinion about student comments during workshops to correct them. Sometimes workshop teachers are too lax in letting some students give opinions that are clearly not helpful for workshopping stories. Also super funny!

best english teacher at UNM. Full of energy and knows how to connect to students on a level that makes the class interesting. You obviously have to do the work, which isn't too bad, but a good class! HIGHLY RECOMMEND TRUJILLO!
